The paper will consist of the following parts. A. Present academic research defining and explaining the chosen topic. This section will show you understand the topic as it is explained academically. Academic, peer-reviewed articles will be used for this section. Examples and/or uses of the topic are encouraged. B. Include a brief explanation of the company and how the pandemic has changed or closed the company. Include here the reason(s) your chose the OB topic to present for this company. C. Recommend how the company should change as the pandemic winds down (or as it continues) based on your chosen OB topic. This could mean how they incorporate your topic now during the pandemic, how they reopen and use your topic once the pandemic ceases, or how they must change their product or service to meet the problems that occurred from the pandemic (or during the pandemic). This is a wide-open area and forward thinking is encouraged. Life in this business may be altered after this pandemic, how can they learn from and improve on what they know about your chosen topic. D. Identify strengths and weaknesses of your recommendation(s) for the company based on your OB topic analysis. Here are the stages you should follow for this project. 1. Topic: Analyze a company’s reward system based on motivation theories. 2. Company: Google 3. Conduct a literature review. Read at least 5 peer reviewed journal articles (from 2010 – current) directly related to your chosen topic. You can use online databases such as EBSCO host, or any other sources as long as its peer reviewed. Articles found on the worldwide web (such as articles contained in the websites of consulting companies, or papers you find through search engines such as yahoo or google) are not acceptable for this part of the project. Please verify your sources are peer-reviewed using Ulrich’s if possible. This identifies the JOURNAL as peer-reviewed which means all articles published in the journal are also peer-reviewed. 4. Research the company through interviews and other sources (knowing someone that worked there or self-experience) if possible, to obtain a better understanding. 5. Brainstorm your recommendations based on your research. What can or should the company do, based on your topic, to be successful either during the pandemic or after the pandemic? Provide these recommendations and include the strengths and weaknesses you found through your research. In other words, what would have to happen to implement your recommendation(s). What could go wrong? What could go right? 6. The paper should be 10 pages double spaced, excluding the references and appendix (you may put your interview questions and responses in the appendix). Here, you should introduce any people you interviewed (their job titles and any demographic characteristics such as age, gender, position, tenure). In addition, how else did you find out the information about the company and its use of the topic you are presenting. This is an important step for the reader – the credibility of your information gathering is vital (2-4 pages). Topic findings and overview: Describe what you learned as a result of the academic research. This will be an overview of the topic your chose and how it relates to your company – both current and in the past. In this part you will use peer-reviewed journal articles for your topic overview and explanations (3 to 4 pages). Recommendations: Provide your recommendations based on your topic findings and company information. Based on your topical literature review, what are they doing right and should keep doing? What were the problems you have observed or read about and what areas do they have for improvement? Your recommendations should incorporate the following (4 to 5 pages). ✓ Be logical ✓ Use an understanding of the scientific/academic OB literature ✓ Cite the necessary literature ✓ Be feasible given the company ✓ Be based on problems you have actually observed or anticipate Summary/Conclusion: Finish your paper. Google is a multinational company based in the United States that specializes in Internet-related goods and services such as software, internet search, advertisement technology, and cloud computing. Sergey Brin and Larry Page founded Google. They both went to Stanford University. Google has evolved to serve hundreds and thousands of clients and users throughout the world since its inception on September 4, 1998. On August 19, 2004, it went public for the first time. Larry and Sergey came up with the moniker "Google" (Rybnicek, Bergner & Gutschelhofer, 2019). It is a variation on the phrase "googol," which refers to a one followed by a hundred zeros in mathematics. Google was established in Menlo Park, California, in the United States. Google debuted Gmail on April Fools' Day in 2004 (Lissillour & Sahut, 2021). Gmail's approach to email featured a number of features such as threaded messages, quick search, and a large quantity of storage. YouTube, an online video sharing platform, was bought by Google in 2006. Every minute, new videos are added to the site.
The brand provides social networking, email, and an office suite as part of their online productivity tools. Google also has desktop products, such as picture organizing and editing software, instant messaging software, and online browsing software. Google is in charge of developing the Android mobile operating system. The Chrome OS browser is the sole operating system based on Chromebooks, which are specialized netbooks. It is believed that over one million servers are running in data centers throughout the world. Every day, it handles over 1 million search requests and over 24 petabytes of user-generated data (Kupfer et al., 2021).
Google hires people who are dedicated and brilliant, rather than those with a lot of experience. Google employees have agreed on shared goals and aspirations for the organization. It includes people from many walks of life who speak a variety of languages in order to respond to the worldwide audience it serves. Google makes a concerted effort to maintain the open culture often associated with start-ups, in which everyone is an active participant and feels comfortable discussing ideas. Google has its own office and coffee shop. Their workspaces and cafés were created to stimulate contact between Googlers inside and across departments in order to inspire work-related dialogue.
Since Google Inc. has more than 70 branches in more than 40 countries and a broad client base, the firm places a premium on worker diversity. Employees' similarities and differences in terms of age, ethnic heritage, physical capabilities and impairments, color, religion, gender, and sexual orientation are classified as workforce diversity (Huskey et al., 2018). Google Inc. must ensure that its personnel are diversified in terms of their backgrounds and knowledge. This is due to the fact that they must service and accommodate a broad consumer base.
One of the primary ways Google encourages its workers is by providing a variety of benefits that go beyond traditional benefits such as healthcare and vacation time. Google is putting a lot more pressure on its workers to be more motivated at work. Google provides free delicious meals in its cafeteria, a dietician, a fitness facility, yoga courses, and a personal trainer at its headquarters site. Aside from employee wellness, Google offers a variety of incentives to keep employees motivated in its various sites. Massages, nap pods, computer games, soccer, and ping pong are all financed by Google.
Professionals at Google are also encouraged to participate in community initiatives by being given more time off. Employees may be permitted to take up to three months of unpaid absence to work on projects in specific cases. Employees can even keep their healthcare coverage throughout this period. Workers, and even future employees, may be inspired to work or aspire to work at Google because of the support system that prior employees have built. "Xoogler groups are among of the largest support portals in the world," one former Google employee is quoted as saying. “You will know someone in whatever nation you visit if you are a Xoogler" (Nickel, 2019).
Conversely, Google Inc. faces disadvantages as a result of its diverse workforce. The drawbacks of labor diversity include competition rather than teamwork, because variety can lead to worker competitiveness. If Google Inc. employees are unable to accept various cultures, they may have a detrimental impact on the company (Fischer, Malycha & Schafmann, 2019). For example, they are collaborating to complete their tasks, yet they will work separately, delaying the process. Then there is the issue of stifled freedom of expression. In this sort of environment, Google employees cannot merely crack jokes, share anecdotes, or express whatever opinions they want for fear of being labeled as discriminatory.
