This project deals with the China-US Trade War. Trade war refers to the conflict that can be initiated in terms of the business and the trade licenses in the economy. The trade war is a clash between the two economies and the countries. This project throws light on the China-US Trade War that has been going on for a long period. It is the conflict between the two most powerful economies of the world. The main purpose of this war is the expansion of trade and business on the worldwide aspects.
Background of the US-China Trade War
The China-US Trade War is an ongoing process of conflict from a very long period. It is the clash between the two most powerful economies of the world. The main cause of the trade war has been the rise of China as the "Super Power '' in the world Economy (Liu & Woo, 2018). The initial stage of the China-US Trade War has been the time when China joined the World Trade Organization. The United States was one of the major trading partners of China by 1984.
Gradually, from the immense pressure of the US Congressional hearings, the tariff rates of the Chinese products were increased by the US. On the joining of China in the World Trade Organization, there has been constant vicissitudes regarding the tariffs rates of the two countries. Since the 1980s, Donald Trump has been forcing a reduction in the tariff rates on the American products. According to Trump, the economy of the US was being seriously damaged by their trading partners, which is, China.
The US government stressed more on the indigenous manufacturing of the products and wanted to shred off their partnership with China. China was also accused of theft of the Intellectual Property of the United States. The theft of IP of /United States has enabled them to relieve them of all the good relations between China and the US. China was accused of unfair trade practices in the partnership.
Factors Leading to the US-China Trade War
The China-US Trade War has been ongoing for a long period. Several factors have led to the conflict of the two countries on a world economic platform.
Failed Partnership between the US and China
China and the US are one of the leading economies of the world. China is considered to be the biggest exporter in the world and the United States is considered to be the biggest importer in the world economy. The two countries decided to tie up for partnership. China and the US became a partnership in trade. At initial stages, the partnership flourished very much. The trade partnership became the third-largest partnership in the world. However, the partnership did not work out. China was accused of practicing unfair trade practices in the partnership. China was accused of demolishing the US Company. China was also accused of stealing Intellectual Property if the US. Hence, the trading partner was the initial cause of the trade wars between these two countries.
China's Engagement with the World Trade Organization
China enrolled its name with the WTO. As China was one of the major leaders in the world economy, the US decided to collaborate with China. Bill Clinton wanted to enrage Americans with the Chinese economy. They believed that emerging with China would make the US richer in resources and their economy would flourish. However, China is not practicing fair practices in the trade partnership with the US.
China kept on demanding high technologies for their products. China wanted the aid of the technologies from the US to improve its branding. The US did not like the fact. Being new to the WTO China did not pay any heed to the rules and the regulations of the WTO. Although after many warnings from the organization, China did not seem to be cooperative with the States.
Conflict in the Tariff Rates
The biggest conflict between the two countries was because of the fluctuation in the tariff rates. After the entrance of China in the World Trade Organization, China was quite clear about its supremacy in the market. Although the US wanted China to reduce their tariff rates in the exports and the imports, China did not follow the instructions. However, after the warnings from the World Trade Organization, China reduced its tariff rates from 40% to 10%. This change did not last for long. The tariff rates were increased by China soon after. The conflict in the tariff rates is one of the major reasons for the commencement of the China-US Trade War.
Chronology of China-US Trade War
The commencement of the official trade war has been dated back in the year of 2018. During this period, Trump was the president of the States. Trump has advocated on the lowering of the tariff rates by China. He has imposed heavy tariff rates on the solar panels and the washing machine that were being imported from China. Trump has created a tough space for operations of China. The tariffs were imposed on Chinese products worth 60 billion US Dollars.
