1) What are various types of nonlethal weapons used for personal protection? Why would
one choose a nonlethal weapon as a means for protection?
Non-lethal weapons are means for self-protection in a more passive way (“Consider Self
Defense Tools For Emergency Preparedness”, n.d.). Unlike weapons like guns or knives, these
non-lethal weapons are not meant for killing anyone for the sake of self-defense but are
“generally used for emergency defense measures rather than attack” (“Consider Self Defense
Tools For Emergency Preparedness”, n.d.). There are several types of non-lethal weapons
including pepper spray, hand-held stun guns, TASER devices, etc (“Consider Self Defense
Tools For Emergency Preparedness”, n.d.). Pepper spray that typically comes in small canisters
are effective means of self-defense as such spray acts like an inflammatory which can a
perpetrator immediately close the eyes, feel difficulty in breathing, and can make the perpetrator
cough terribly (“Consider Self Defense Tools For Emergency Preparedness”, n.d.). Hand-held
stun guns are electrical devices that generate high voltage to prevent an attacker to commit any
harm and “Touching a person with the prongs on the stun gun quickly immobilizes the attacker”
(“Consider Self Defense Tools For Emergency Preparedness”, n.d.). TASER device, on the other
hand, “is a conducted energy weapon that utilizes compressed nitrogen to shoot two small probes
up to 15 feet. These probes are connected to the weapon by high-voltage insulated wire
(“Consider Self Defense Tools For Emergency Preparedness”, n.d.).
It is better to use non-lethal weapons as means of self-defense as they are less devastating
like weapons like guns and knives and bear less risk while in use. The non-lethal weapons for
self-defense minimize the risk of intrusion or attack by potential perpetrators without leaving any
chance to kill anybody by mistake. And hence, it is better to choose non-lethal weapons as means
for protection.
