Three strikes laws are statutes that have been enacted by state governments of the United
States of America since the e
arly 1990s for punishing criminal offenders convicted of three or
more than three grave criminal offenses, and this law was first passed by the state of Washington
in 1993 (“Three Strikes Laws”, n.d.). According to the state of Washington’s three strikes law or
Initiative 593 “Anyone convicted of three separate violent felonies must be sentenced to life in
prison with no chance for Parole” (“Three Strikes Laws”, n.d.). The state of California passed its
own three strikes law in 1994 and through this enactment the state mandated “a sentence of 25
years to life for a third felony conviction” (“Three Strikes Laws”, n.d.). The legislatures of the
different state governments of the United States have offered a rationale for the enactment of the
three strikes laws. The primary justification of the enactment of this genre of law is based on the
fact that offenders who commit consecutive crimes are menaces for the entire society and hence,
