The 2018 Massachusetts law says that salary history (e.g., the fact that the male principal oboist received high pay when he joined BSO in 2001, to match what his previous employer paid him) cannot be used to justify gender pay differences. Similar laws have been enacted recently in California, Delaware, NYC, and Philadelphia, prohibiting employers from asking job candidates about their current or previous salaries
