Book Review Components A Book Summary is an evaluation or analysis of a given work. It is not simply a summary of what the book says. Focus on the following elements as you describe the book. Each item (1-5) should be covered in approximately a half to three quarters of a page (double spaced). · Author's thesis / ideas (main argument of the work) · Important data from the work (facts that the author uses to make his / her point) · Characters / people presented in the book (don't simply list names but describe how the author uses different characters to illustrate / communicate his thesis) · Organization of the book used by the author (how did the organization help present the thesis / ideas of the author) · Value of the work (this point is more subjective but should discuss the significance of the work when it was written and what it has to say for people today) · Include citation information (Title, Author, Publisher, Date of publication) on a cover sheet or on a bibliography page
