The goal of the project is as follows: To design an interactive solution for a chosen problem area (where currently inefficacies or inadequacies exist), such that the interactive solution must be either a website or a web mobile/tablet app. Initially, you will choose a topic for the project and work on that throughout the semester for assessment A and B. The final goal of the project is to present a proof of concept hi- fidelity interactive prototype, which may be non-functional in the true sense and ideally comprising of a series of software wireframes. Ensure that your choice of topic is not too minimalistic in nature as for the assessments, you will require at least three features/scenarios; where a scenario will be defined as the point of when a user initiates action to the point when the user is (un)successful in completing the action. You will have some freedom in choosing the problem area of your topic. It could be related to your daily life at home, work, university, etc. You may decide to address a specific research problem by improving the current interactive solution or coming up with a completely new solution. When choosing to develop a new solution (web app or website), think from an entrepreneurship perspective. So, here are some questions to ask/research when deciding on a new idea: Has the proposed solution (website/app) been done before? If yes, can it be improved? How can I add novelty to the idea (completely new, adding new features etc.)? Think as if you are launching your own start-up and you need to develop an app/website for it. Topic: Pet adoption website- pet sitting (someone going on holiday, so they find a home for their pet) This project report aims to present your topic, the rationale and motivation for choosing your topic, and its importance with relevant HCI literature. You will also need to benchmark your proposed idea/concept by comparing it against 2 existing commercial applications that are similar. The required length of the report is approximately 1000 words. 1. Introduction and Motivation: introducing your topic and problem; providing a context for your topic/problem; justifying the choice of the topic/problem and highlighting the importance of the topic/problem. 2. Benchmark Design: 0. If your idea is entirely new e.g., designing a new website for a business that didn't have any website, then: Benchmark your proposed idea/concept by comparing it against 2 existing similar applications/website/interfaces. Discuss pros and cons and how your idea advances the app/web or system's market compared to the existing 2 applications. 1. If your idea is about revamping an existent interface, e.g., a current website: Then conduct a mini-review of the current interface. You need to clearly state at least two issues with the existing interface/UI. Give more details than "hard for the user to navigate, etc.". 3. Scenario design: Highlight and then briefly describe 3 interaction scenarios within your chosen topic. A scenario will typically be one feature of your system. Showcase the scenario description by employing one of the following techniques: use cases, storyboards, or task analysis. For example, the three main interaction scenarios of Facebook could be: (1- the user edits their profile like updating their profile photo. 2- the user creates a new FB post, 3- the user comment on someone else post). 4. Low-fidelity prototype For the scenarios, you did in section 3, design a low-fidelity prototype. You are free to use any prototyping tools, e.g., JustInMind or Visio or even paper wireframing. Keep in mind that you are required to develop a website that uses HTML5 and CSS3 in Project B. So, it is totally fine if you choose HTML5 to design the prototype of your website. Do not use any templates/WordPress etc. The prototype is a medium to support your initial concept and ideas. For example, the prototype should show where the 'basic' button is located; or would it be possible to fit 20 images aesthetically on a single page, etc.? The prototype need not be fully functional. At this stage, you only need to demonstrate the initial concept of your interface designs. Remember to indicate which browser (i.e., IE, Firefox, Safari, Chrome, etc.) you are targeting as the main working platform. Feel free to include any wireframes/design choices that were rejected. It is mandatory to have at least these three starter pages: Home page, About US, Contact Us (that uses a form), and any specific pages you need for your interface. Ensure you don't use any copyrighted materials or seek permission to use them. Example of paper wireframe: Or you can create the wireframe created using JustInMind: In section 4, includes screenshots or photos/scans of your wireframes. You are free to combine sections 3 and 4 into one section. You can talk about a specific scenario and then insert the relevant wireframes after that. Reference Needed. Marking Criteria: Introduction: The idea is well introduced and it is either novel or improves on an existent interface. It is well-articulated with the aid of analysing related literature or UI. Benchmark Design: The proposed application is well benchmarked and compared against two existing interfaces or a mini review of the existent interface is clearly pointing to issues pertaining to design in the existing interface Presentation: The report is outstanding both from a written and visual perspective; Referencing, if needed, follows the stated norms and conventions; language (grammatical and otherwise) is clear and where appropriate images are included and captioned. Scenario Design: A minimum of three distinct scenarios are presented and clearly explained by means of an accurate representation of one of the scenario description techniques (TA or UML or story). Scenarios presented are detailed and involve several interaction steps. Low Fidelity Prototype: A protype is developed by means of using handsketched or digital wireframes are used e.g., using JustinMind. Wireframes are presented across the chosen three scenarios AND Details in interaction design are clearly articulated and visually implied.
