Costa 2 Tiago Costa Jason Elznic Composition II 23 April 2021 As time went by, it became more and more normal for students to go to university straight from high school. Everyone knows about the pressure that is about to form and have all those doubts in mind; which course should you take? where are you going to college? Would you like to get a scholarship? Unfortunately, these days, it is normal for students not to finish college and despite all these things, money is the real name of the problem. For those who don’t play some kind of sport, that could be a possibility. With low rates of college completion, government should invest in community college programs. It could help in order to get students an easier way to get a degree without getting on debt. Buchanan and Wilson say on their article about free community colleges that internationally, the U.S. college completion rate has declined and the proportion of young adults with an associate degree has declined in comparison to other developed countries (Field, 12). With that being said, we can conclude that the future depends on college completion rates. Almost all employment needs at least one single degree while others require even more completed education. For students, going to college is costing way too more than it supposed to be and like other stuffs in life, if we can’t effort, we can’t buy it so we start to get in debt because we are spending far more money than we have. How am I supposed to tell someone to don’t invest in his future? He knows how a degree can make a difference when finding a job and start a career so he just jumps into debt. Imagine how many people, especially poor, would be helped in order to complete college. In the last 30 years, the average cost for attending a public college for your institution has become thrice and for a private school the amount has become twice. More than 50% of the American students have to borrow loan so that they can pay for college. An average student debt in the year 2020 was $37,584. As per the data of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the combined student loan was of approximately $1.6 trillion. As per the consistent growth and the education of a student the total amount of death would increase to $2 trillion by the year 2024.
The major amount of loan is carried on by the adults between the age group of 25 and 34. Sometimes the student does not complete his college due to various reasons due to which the repayment of the debt which becomes harder for them. The student that forms a major portion of the US economy over and above the burden that it is on millions of individuals. (Madeline St. Amour (2009)). The US government backs around 92% of the student loan because of which it has become a political issue.
US Senator Elizabeth Warren with Senate minority leader chuck Schumer of New York appealed that $50,000 should be cancelled from the loan of each student. This is awaited by the president assent. The community college itself is facing difficulties itself in providing the support for education and housing and food. The community college has minimal resources available with them at per student level. The Pell Grant used to cover the full cost of community college which after erosion of few years now only sponsors around 60% of the fees of the students and the balance has to be paid by the student for which student earn to loans. Pell grant aimed at students going to a community college will not have to take loans but during the course of time it has come down to the student borrowing loans for community college.
In my opinion, the cost of completion of college especially for the community college going students should be made free so that the education level increases which in turn will reduce the crime rate and the chances of employment will increase. Community colleges help in educating around 40% of the students in courses which are under 6 years (Elizabeth Mann Levesque (2018)).
