Introduction
Blockchain in a system can simply be defined as a digital technology, which ensures that information is recorded in a way, which makes it difficult to cheat, hack or change the system. Blockchain can be considered as a digital ledger or transaction, which is distributed and duplicated across the entire network of computer systems o
n the blockchain. Through this essay an effort has been made to analyse the attributes associated with blockchain. This essay shall shed light on attributes like transparency, provenance, accessibility, security and privacy. The essay will discuss this attribute in context of blockchain and blockchain architectural design mechanism. Furthermore, the essay will also take into consideration the challenges associated with each of these attributes.
Transparency in Blockchain Technology
Blockchain technology is the decentralized system distributed ledger that records the source of digital asset. Through the inherent design, the data on the blockchain cannot be modified, which makes it is a legitimate disruptor for the industries such as payments, cybersecurity and healthcare (Zheng et al., 2017). In blockchain technology one of the important aspects is the transparency. Blockchain has the potential to improve the supply chains and the clinical trials, enforce the law, enable responsibility consumption, and the enhance democratic governance, through the traceability of the information as a means of ensuring that no data is modified in any undue process. Enabling the transparency of information is one of the major promises that is made by the blockchain technology, which provides the users with completely auditable and valid ledger of the transactions. With the necessary encryption and the control mechanisms, the blockchain technology safeguards the transparency by storing the information in such manner that it can never be altered or manipulated, without recording any type of changes made. The transparency and the accountability that the blockchain can able to afford plays an important role in restraining the unjustified online surveillances, censorship and abuse of human rights. In the situation of a completely public blockchain, all the information stored becomes public, and anyone can access the stored data as they are supposed to be both accessible for everyone and that also leads to the transparency of the information, and avoiding any kind of manipulation. In the supply chain process the transparency in the blockchain enables the consumers to track anything across the supply chain, and they will able to know the ingredients of their foods, such as whether it is organic and fair trade, and whether the goods they buy are genuine or not and also the people involved in the production process are provided with the basic human rights or not for production process work.
However, as discussed by Saberi et al. (2019) that the transparency in blockchain technology is neither absolute or unconditional, which is a major reason of concern, still the blockchain technology offers numerous degrees of transparency depending on the domain of the application. However, in the situation of the permissioned blockchain, the users require the necessary permission to transact within another network user, and the transaction occurs in a very closed ecosystem, where data remain confidential and continuous authorization is required for accessing the data. Here the linking of the public addresses to the individual users becomes a difficult task to be achieved. There are certain data that requires permission and that is protected by General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), which grants data subjected to protection against the automated processing of their information. However, enforcing the GDPR on public and the permissionless blockchains may be challenging on the legal point of view. Similarly, the questions have also been raised with respect to the possibility for blockchains to adhere to the principles of data minimisation, considering the continuous addition, editing, deleting and growing of blockchain. Hence, these are the potential barriers regarding the transparency for the blockchain technology.
Provenance in Blockchain Technology
Provenance is a software service, which is designed for the product making businesses to share their part of story and the impact behind their product at the point of sale. As discussed by Montecci, Plangger & Etter (2019) have discussed that provenance in blockchain helps the businesses to remain transparent on business level (where the company is based), product level (supply chain mapping) and item level (when the batch was made). Provenance enables businesses to easily collaborate with their data, along with the open data and also the verification of the key information is done on an immutable data ledger is called as blockchain. Blockchain holds the most important and allows anyone to access the validity of the data. Data provenance is the field of recording the origin of data from the commencement to the various stages of the lifecycle of data. Hence, data provenance helps in providing the detailed overview of the process of collection of data, where it was stored and the manner in which it was used, and it records the essentially forms an audit trial for the data itself.
Data lakes is gaining a lot of attention, where the organizations are becoming more aware regarding the differences between the data warehouse and data lakes. Data lakes holds the data from multiple sources in the organization and that in a very long duration. When the data gets cleaned and sterile, the outcome of the operations is recorded again in the blockchain. The data are also recorded in the blockchain...
