Youth lost, as machines of change in society
Youth have long been considered instigators of change. Every revolution, every historic new has come about with the involvement of youth. The question is what kind of change is it that we seek t
oday. Do we want this change to be a positive or a negative one? The way our youth behave today wakes us to a grim reality- we have wasted the younger generation, in more than one way. What we observe through this paper is how this has happened and what can be done to change this reality.
The world today, is not the same it was 30 years ago. Changes have come about in every field and in every area of life. The lives of people have become busy, so busy that the youth today, are being considered a nuisance that they want to get rid of. The adults find youth a threat to their peace and quiet and thus want them as far away as possible. The resistance against the Youth Circle by the residents is one prime example of this fact. The residents wanted the Youth Circle to be located as far away from their neighbourhood as possible.
Youth are seen as trouble and people hide no feelings in demonstrating that they want them gone. In order to secure their own peace, people do not consider the feelings they instil in youth. Youth understand this very well as can be observed in the comment of the girl in Laurel District
“They don’t want youth in this neighbourhood” (Tilton, 153).
Youth have always been loud and rowdy, sometimes even violent. Why is it that today’s youth are considered especially violent for the slightest of matters? Making youth feel hostile naturally results in brewing hostility. The case of the gentleman showing gun to youth who painted as part of their school project is clearly demonstrative of this (Tilton, 113). In situations like this, it is natural that youth feel threatened. This situation is not a singular one, rather it is increasingly becoming a common occurrence and the insecurities of youth are continuously growing. As a result, youth feel forsaken and abandoned and eventually give rise to youth who break laws and cause trouble.
Breaking a law and causing trouble is not unexpected from children who are at the age of adrenalin-rush. However, making that into a crime that requires strict penalty even sentencing them to prisons and rehabilitation centres; that is problematic. Kids sent to these places then...
