Introduction
Multiculturism is reality of the world. Immigration and refugees made it possible to have diverse population in a country. Multiculturism is reflected through people, existence of minority, m
igrated tribes, exchange students, existence of foreign companies along with their leaders. Australia is unique in all forms. A beautiful country and continent surrounded by numerous small islands. Large population of country are either atheist (30 per cent) or Christian (52 per cent of the population) including Roman Catholic and Anglican. The remaining people follow Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam, and Buddhism. In 1966, most of the Australian population follows Christianity (88 per cent) in comparison to 2016 (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2016). The term multiculturism officially come in existence in Australia with the introduction of policy of multiculturism in 1970. This essay deals with the multiculturism, influence of multiculturism in Australia. It also gives the outline comparison of multiculturism in Australia and Canada.
Multiculturism in Australia
The existence of multiculturism is long before 1900, but the persistent use of the word can be seen in past forty years with introduction of international migration. As suggested by Taylor (2016), the term multiculturism can be defined as the existence of several different cultures or ethnic groups within the society. The migration in western civilisation in search of better job opportunities or quality education has increased the migration in last 20-30 years. There is a trend of being settled to the country where person is seeking job or studies. This led to the prevalence of multiculturism within the country. As mentioned by Mitchell (2016), it was accepted by the society due to peaceful existence of many cultures side by side. This has solved many cultural issues by nowadays it has raised many questions. As noted by Malik (2015), multiculturism is criticised for existence of many social conflicts in the world.
The racial discrimination, negligence of rights of minorities and existence of sense of superiority are majorly for being native of the country. As explained by Ivison (2015), multiculturism is criticised for promotion of immigration of people in one country leading to the lack of job opportunities for the native people. The question arises is that ‘Is multiculturism a success or failure’. Nowadays, concept of multiculturism can be described using different theories. The idea has become blurred and making is difficult to distinguish between globalism and liberalism. This concept is a political philosophy, in which diversity and cultural difference are kept in account. There are several factors that either facilitate or act as barrier in successful implementation of multiculturism. Some of them are de-securitisation of ethnic relations, human rights, border control, diversity of immigrant group, and economic contribution (Bader, 2018).
De-Securitisation of Ethnic Groups: Multiculturism is successful if the relation between states and the minorities are good. Minorities are not considered as a security threat like Muslim as minority in western countries such as United States are considered as threat for the nation. There is sense of insecurity in the states towards them.
Human Rights: To support the multiculturism, there is must be existence of shared commitment towards human respect and human rights in context of ethnic and religious lines. If states debarred certain ethnic groups from their rights or unable to provide them respect, then there is breach of concept. There are instances where backlash toward specific minority group can be seem like backlash towards Rohingya Muslims or Hindus in Myanmar.
Border Control: Multiculturism become negative concept for the people, when people of the native country feared that they lack the control over their border. For example, some of the people of US feared that they are losing control at their border in the hand of Mexican people. This fear can be seen in those countries, mainly in which high immigration or unauthorised immigration can be seen.
Diversity of Immigrant Group: Multiculturism is successful when there is immigration from several countries not just from one country. For example, Silicon Valley of US is a concentrated area of software engineers, where engineers from worldwide can be seen immigrated there and then finally people get settled there.
Economic Contribution: This concept is successful only when the efforts are shown by migrants also. The contribution of migrants economically towards the society and making good effort in development of society by...
