This week you will prepare and submit a risk register for your selected case study. The risk register should include 3 risks from 3 different categories. The risk matrix as presented in the video on risk analysis should be used for the likelihood, impact and risk ratings. The risk register from the video should be used as the basis for this assignment but make sure you address all the criteria in the rubric. You may want to add columns to your matrix.

Particular attention should be paid to:

  • Clearly describing both the root cause and the potential impact on the project, ie it is not sufficient to just write "Going over budget" as the risk. You need to identifywhythe project might be over budget, what is the root cause or the reason behind it.

  • Using the likelihood and impact process shown in the video and practised in the weekly tutorial.

  • Describing a mitigation measure that seems appropriate to the level of risk, ie a high or extreme risk would warrant more extensive mitigation measures.

  • Formatting - this will be in the form of a risk register, so a landscape format will be needed. Professional formatting will need to include the organisational name, project name, document name, page number, document date or revision number, as well as branding or project logo etc.

BUSM1269 Introduction to Project Management School of Property, Construction and Project Management BUSM3307 Project Management Concepts Case Study Brief Tesla Model Y Key Project Information Client / Sponsor: Tesla; JB Straubel, Chief Technical Officer Project name: Tesla Model Y Start date: August 2017 Location: USA Budget: Unavailable Project Background The Tesla company, led by Elon Musk, is transforming many technologies around the world - batteries, power electronics, motors, space, to name just a few. The Model Y is a crossover all electric vehicle, a compact SUV. This project is about designing and getting ready for manufacture of the Model Y. Many of the parts of the Model Y will be based on the Model 3 which is currently in manufacture (although facing many manufacturing issues). The project objective should be the completion of the design, testing, 20 alpha builts (prototypes), and a manufacturing plan for the Model Y - think carefully about those 4 elements as it will guide the project. It should get to a point where manufacture is ready to begin, which would include some capital expenditure for manufacturing facilities and a full manufacturing plan. The actual ongoing manufacture of the car should not be part of your project. The project commenced in 2017 and is intended to start manufacture sometime in 2018. You should pretend that you are writing any of the project documents as at the start of the project, so you can date everything accordingly like you wrote them in 2017. Advice You should take the role of a product project manager within Tesla who is responsible for the design development for the Model Y. There has been some information released already about the Model Y. This information should inform some of the elements in your project, but the focus for you is on the project management and not the technical engineering specs. This project could become very complicated with many parts if you let it. Think carefully about what you include, and what you exclude, as part of your project. For example, is the marketing of the Model Y really part of the design and manufacture plan? Or is a separate project that someone else deals with and therefore excluded from your project plans? Don’t be scared off this project if you’re not a car fanatic. It isn’t about the technical car stuff really, and you won’t lose marks if you don’t get the exact car components right. It’s a fun project that lets you think about the process of design development and prototyping a new product. All 3 risks from different categories to show breadth of thinking. 4.0 to >2.0 Pts Some marks All 3 risks are described, but some items a little unclear and could have been better explained in terms of root cause and/or impact. OR the risks are very similar, which doesn’t demonstrate breadth of thinking 2.0 to >0.0 Pts Some marks Some of the 3 risks are described and project specific, but more often it is the final impact and not the root cause that is described, “Going over budget” is listed, instead of “Going over budget because o…”. Risks used that are very similar to each other. 0.0 Pts No marks No risks identified or described, or the risks are too generic (such as just listing a risk category, eg “environmental risk”) to be useful 6.0 pts This criterion is linked to a learning outcomeRisk Analysis 5.0 to >2.5 Pts Full marks Used exactly as per video, likelihood x impact = degree of risk. Words and numbers both used in degree of risk, ie “High 16”, not just “high”, or not just “16” 2.5 to >0.0 Pts Some marks Concept used but the method not as per video, or used but only words or only numbers 0.0 Pts No marks Not included, no assessment of final degree of risk 5.0 pts This criterion is linked to a learning outcomeRisk Response 6.0 to >4.0 Pts Full marks Risk response selection and description of mitigation measure is clear and appropriate for all 3 risks. Includes who is responsible. 4.0 to >2.0 Pts Some marks Mitigation measure included but could be clearer on what the action is or who is responsible 2.0 to >0.0 Pts Some marks Mitigation measure included but unclear what the action is or who is responsible 0.0 Pts No marks Not included 6.0 pts This criterion is linked to a learning outcomePresentation 3.0 Pts Full marks Perfectly professional. Branded as the company they are pretending to be and includes organisation name, project name, document name and revision date/number, and page numbers. 3.0 to >2.0 Pts Some marks Well laid out and clear, but some professional polish lacking. 2.0 to >0.0 Pts Some marks Some errors are there such as spelling mistakes, inconsistencies, lack of project name included, etc. Key formatting items not included, such as the project name. 0.0 Pts No marks Completely unreadable (sorry) 3.0 pts Total points: 20.0
