Dame Anita Roddick is an entrepreneur who is the founder of internationally trusted beauty brand The Body Shop (Lassk, 2019). The retail chain has been started by her. This businessperson is an avid environmental campaigner. She believes in recognising and acknowledging the employees who will help the business in the longer run. Her company is famous worldwide for providing natural beauty products and this company has been the first one to promote fair trade in the countries. She was a person who believed in earning profit and the formation of moral leadership.
Background of the Chosen Entrepreneur and Their Venture
In 1976, with the ambition of becoming a self-sustained person, quality skincare products with refillable containers were marketed in America. This was her first shop and she began the second shop six months later (Tomida, 2020). Within 1991,700 branches were formed and she has been awarded a world vision award for development initiative. From that day, she was very much conscious about maintaining the environment. Refillable skincare bottles were her first initiative towards that. The products have become very popular, which was not started with any marketing rule and her intentions and efforts were just so on point that brought about the outcome.
In 1980, The Body Shop became the most trusted brand in the United Kingdom. This company was able to prohibit using ingredients that will be tested on animals. The brand image formed was not intentional but an outcome of environmental consciousness and ethical trading. Moral values and ethical practices were the core of the company.
Entrepreneurial Qualities, Characteristics and Traits
Dame Roddick is known as a business leader and a socially poised entrepreneur. However, certain qualities make this person different and unique from others. First, the style of leadership and the generous approaches left the customers mesmerised. Second, she was an inspirational character who believed in doing ethical things. Instead of following the crowd, she made her statement in the generation (Abdullah, Hadi & Dana, 2018). Third, she was an innovative and influential person; today, more than 2000 retail outlets serve 75 million customers with international success.
She has been famous for her critical thinking strategies and ethical leadership style, which are powerful combinations that can bring success in the life of an entrepreneur (Igwe, Okolie & Nwokoro, 2019). "Necessity is the mother of invention" is applicable for this person, who has started her journey just as a small businessperson to earn a livelihood for her family. Setting up a vision and constantly working on it has made this person achieve the greater heights of life. She always wanted to be a part of the community and what makes her different is not simply investing but investing in what one believes in.
She was a kind-hearted person who believed in ethical trading practices and never supported the testing of materials on animals, using ingredients that can be harmful to the ozone layer protecting the earth, hampering the rainforests and ultimately causing harm to the earth as a whole. Her commitment towards her environment and Mother Nature made her come up with a natural product. Before starting and expanding the business, the vision was set and constant efforts were made towards achieving that vision.
She was a person whose vision became the vision of the company that she made. Focusing primarily on the human relationship, business philosophy has been developed. She was very much concerned about social welfare, animal welfare and environmental protection (The Body Shop, 2021). Her motto was working hard and there is no shortcut to success. She believed in mutual respect between the employees and the manners that can bring a working condition that will benefit the customers. She was trying to balance her profit and ethical strategies, which can fulfil the needs of the staff and the natural environment.
