Introduction
Food is an important part of our lives. Food is not simply an edible item, it has many significances. It cannot be looked for the nutrition purpose as anthropologist considered it as a symbol, which shows the society and the nation. Food is bound with social relationships between people. Food can be used for the identification purpose as food is a display of power, gender, culture, religion, ethnicity, history, hierarchy, inclusion in the society and exclusion. Food is not just edible or non-edible; it is more than that in context of religion. For Muslims prefer to eat halal meat. In Hinduism, leftover food is considered impure. Food has witnessed the long history of humans. It has seen the wars, it remarkable in identifying the mingling of cross culture. For example, Italian food like pizza is not confined to Italy, it has broken its boundaries and reach to the common streets of Australia, America and Asia.
Intersection of Food with Identity
Food is important part of daily life. It has not studies for nutritional purpose. Anthropologist studies food for understanding the society, people or community. Choices of food people eat and drink they consume formed the identity of the individual. Food gives the identity or display the identity of people, their country or religion.
For example, tortilla is a Mexican food, people who cooked or eat tortilla are simply identified as Mexican. As mentioned by Ichijo and Ranta (2016), food is a symbolically consume identity. Food consumed by the individual are largely under the influence of the religious belief, culture, society background and experiences. For example, trend of eating green tea or lemon tea can be commonly seen in upper class. Lower class can be seen drinking usual tea.
Green tea or lemon tea are considered luxury in some places that the economically poor people cannot afford in daily basis. Some food demonstrates the religious identity. For example, eggnog is a food people consume in Christmas, on contrary, Sewain is consumed on Eid. As noted by Hackel et al. (2018), food is a language that expresses social structure and community system. Evolution is part of life, evolution in society, lifestyle and culture of the individual can be seen in the food. Food has also been evolved over the past few years.
Earlier, people used to eat that food, which was specific to their religion and society. With the trend of multiculturism, food has also witnessed multiculturism in the variety cooked in the houses.
