We are going to call this last Homework 7 the '

Muddy Point

'. As we wrap up this class, students should think about the broad focus of sustainability (recall Lecture 2) and the variety of best practices today’s innovations and technologies are evolving to support improvements. As you read different perspectives and think about supply chains, some sustainability initiatives have potentially negative consequences (i.e. wildlife impact from wind energy) and others may not have the overall impact desired (i.e. spending more energy to make it then it will save). A vital problem solving skill requires evaluating alternatives to select the path with the greatest outcome to support triple bottom line goals. We have a long journey ahead and some technology has yet to be proven successful on any major projects as it simply may be someone's idea thatmay take 30+years to actually develop and market to use.

In this homework assignment students need to think about what they learned over the course and write an original post on a

sustainability concept you feel is unclear

as to its ability to achieve triple bottom line goals. This may be what you seemed to think is the most fuzzy or muddy as to the viability of that sustainability concept(prioritize your thoughts and come up with one major thought). Students should further consider the economic costs and benefits as outlined in Chapter 14, as well as cutting edge technology evolving in Chapter 15(students should research this to support their viewpoint). Students may consider the lag time it might take for research and development to enable implementation to achieve the big goals of sustainability. Students may have found simply that some ideas behind sustainability concepts just do not appear viable at allcurrently. These are simply examples of a 'muddy point'.

This post should be a

reflective essay

which is your personal opinion on this topic (different from Homework 3 and 4, but still should be a five paragraph essay). To learn more about this type of essay and how to write a reflective essay seehttp://reflective-essay.org/reflection-paper-format/. Students must post their essay first (200 word minimum) with the post title clearly illustrating the main idea of their 'muddy point'. As the link provided here illustrates, the original post should focus on Steps 1 through 3 (introduction, body and conclusion). While replies are the focus of Step 4.
