Technologies that enable high rises
The world has changed drastically in the last 100 to 200 years, especially in terms of residence. Earlier, the majority of the population lived in villages in homes
that were open, broad and at most had 2 to 3 storeys. Industrialization gradually resulted in the movement of the population towards the urban areas. This caused constraint in space and structures that were vertical gradually started replacing smaller buildings. This continued until today cities are populated with plenty of high rises and tall buildings that landmark them.
High rise buildings are not easy to construct and require plenty of extra considerations when it comes to construction. Skyscrapers today have become more of a fashionable thing. Since skyscrapers can be considered a super high rise, modern technology has made efficient use of resources to ensure their strength, resistance to earth movement, high winds, and other lateral forces.
In order to ensure excellent construction, various relevant technologies during the construction of high rises are in use. These include material technology, construction technology, special equipment management, structural technologies, IT technologies, advanced facilities, elevators and management for green technology.
There are several types of loads at play in a high rise. These can broadly be classified as vertical and lateral. Vertical loads consist of self-weight, live load and snow load that are directed downwards as a part of the gravitational force, while horizontal loads or lateral loads like wind and earth movement are directed orthogonally and can thus affect the stability of the building negatively.
In essence, high rise buildings or tall buildings are considered thus only when lateral loads like wind and earthquakes play a dominant part in the structural design of the building (Coull & Smith, 1991). So, in order to create a high rise, the two most important factors that need to be considered are resistance to earth movement...
