Detailed task instructions

Context:
We take for granted the vast range of materials that we rely on in our daily lives. The way we use materials depends on their properties. Different types of materials may be put to the same use e.g. houses may be built of timber, bricks, steel, or a combination of these.

Task:
Present a comparative analysis of two polymeric materials, which are used for a common application within society. (800-1000 words – main body).

Using your research make a justified recommendation on the material most suited to the task chosen.

You need to:

  1.  Research two different types of non-metallic polymeric materials used for the same application (use) eg. cotton vs polyester for fabric used to make clothes.

  2. 2. Choose an industrial, domestic, artistic, structural or sporting application for your chosen materials.

  3. 3. Compare and contrast the microscopic structure of each material in terms of its bonding. Relate this and each structure’s macroscopic properties to the chosen application.

  4. 4. Find and analyse secondary data to support your recommendation

  5. 4. Justify a recommendation as to which material is better suited to the application chosen. A range of characteristics needs to be considered.

Task: Present a comparative analysis of two polymeric materials, which are used for a common application within society. (800-1000 words – main body). Using your research make a justified recommendation on the material most suited to the task chosen. You need to: 1. 4. 4. Find and analyse secondary data to support your recommendation 5. 4. Justify a recommendation as to which material is better suited to the application chosen. A range of characteristics needs to be considered. Tips: 1. The purpose of this report is to recommend the most suitable material for the chosen use. 2. Secondary data must be presented and analysed to support recommendation. 3. Relevant, labelled and referenced diagrams are to be included. 4. Text should be referenced and cited appropriately. 5. The report is to be between 800 and 1000 words, not including tables, diagrams and bibliography. Personal Checklist (monitoring tool): By monitoring date (week 6) · Compare and contrast the two materials in terms of macroscopic and microscopic properties. · Explain how their properties relate to the chosen application in terms of the “chemistry” of the two materials, e.g. how their bonding determines properties. · Provide an overall evaluation of the suitability of the two materials, based on your own research. · Include relevant, labelled and referenced diagrams. By due date · Referenced and cited appropriately – internally and with reference list. · Signed declaration of ownership. · Not exceed 1000 words.
