HUM 2210 Johnson Gordon Rule paper Johnson – page 1 of 2 HUM 2020 Johnson Paper #2 (Fall 2023) To satisfy the mandated writing component of this course, you are asked to write two papers running about three pages each (about 1000 words each) on subjects based on the material covered in this course. This handout deals with the first of your two papers. For this assignment, you are asked to write what is called a personal response or impressionistic essay. In such an essay, you present your own personal opinion about the material. In other words, you focus on questions such as: • What did this material say to me? • Was there something in this material that made me think? • Was there something in this material that taught me something? • Was there something in this material that moved me emotionally? Please understand that you are not asked to write research papers, and any paper that consists mostly of simply factual information will receive a very low grade. Emphasize analysis of the material and your response to that material. However, be sure to present specific and detailed evidence to support your conclusions. Because you are asked to write about what the material means to you, you should have no need to consult outside secondary sources such as websites or books. You are writing about what you think—so the content of the paper will come from you. Of course, if you do use outside sources, you must be careful about documenting your sources and avoiding plagiarism. Be sure to meet (or come very close to) the 1000 word threshold. Papers must meet this threshold to earn a passing grade of C or better. Topics for Paper #2. Please choose one of these five topics. All of these topics are comparative, and all of them involve comparisons across different time periods, including the ancient and medieval eras. 1. Write an essay comparing the views of Pico della Mirandola and Thomas Hobbes on human nature. In your opinion, which thinker is closest to the truth? You are asked to make a definite choice between the two, and to support your conclusions persuasively and with convincing evidence. 2. Write an essay comparing how Wordsworth viewed nature and the views on nature presented by St. Francis or Lao Zi. (For Lao Zi, you may have to do some additional research on the Taoist idea of harmony with the Tao.) 3. Write an essay comparing how Wordsworth viewed nature and the views of nature advocated by Montaigne. 4. Discuss how Wollstonecraft might respond to the content of Heloise’s Third Letter. Use the material from the Vindication of the Rights of Woman discussed in class. Be very sure to discuss the Heloise Third Letter discussed in class and posted in Canvas, not other “Third Letters” found online (numbering systems for the Abelard and Heloise letters sometimes vary). 5. Compare Donne’s insistence that “no man is an island” with what Pericles taught about the importance of active participation as a citizen. How do these two thinkers describe the idea of community? 6. If you wish, you may choose another topic, but only with approval in advance. Format: While the content of a paper is of course of prime importance, the physical presentation of a paper is also very important. Therefore, please follow these guidelines: (1.) The paper should be double-spaced. (2.) Use a traditional serif font of standard size, such as Times Roman 11-point or 12-point. Johnson – page 2 of 2 (3.) Use standard margins, both top and bottom and left and right. Most word- processing programs use 1” margins as the default setting, and that is fine. (4.) Indent the first line of each new paragraph no more than ten spaces. (5.) Do not place extra lines between paragraphs. (6.) Do not use decorative graphics or illustrations. Be sure also to submit your work in .pdf format only. Attempts to upload papers in other formats will bounce. Please submit actual files. Links to a cloud service (Google Docs, etc.) cannot be accepted. Grammar, spelling, mechanics: Your papers should employ formal academic English, and should be free of serious errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and usage. Do not hesitate to use the services of the Tutoring Center (online) or the online Canvas Writing Center. Deadlines: Please upload your paper through the digital dropbox in Canvas. Papers submitted via email, as attachments to the Canvas comment box, or as hard copies will not be accepted. A reminder: papers must be in .pdf format. Technical issues are not an excuse for a late or missing submission. If you are having problems uploading a paper, please contact Canvas tech support. Late papers will be accepted, but with a grade ceiling of 70 points. Academic honesty: Plagiarism is defined as the presentation of another person’s work as yours. It includes not only the use of another person’s words, but also the use of ideas and facts derived from others without giving appropriate credit. Papers that contain plagiarized material may receive a grade of “F.” The submission of plagiarized work may also be grounds for issuing an “F” grade for the entire course. Students who submit papers containing plagiarized material are also subject to disciplinary action under the HCC Student Code of Conduct. To avoid plagiarism, my first recommendation is to resist the temptation to run to the Internet. You should not need to consult outside sources to complete this assignment. If you do use outside sources, remember to either (1) place borrowed material within quotation marks (“ “) or (2) reword borrowed material completely in your own words (minor changes do not count). Remember also that you must cite your sources accurately and in detail.
