Grove was a vast plantation land to which he later added, Drayton Island and White Oak that were equally large Drayton island alone being two thousand acres of coffee plantation. So, Kingsley’s plantations in Florida were substantially large. As a result any change in political or social power in Florida was bound to affect the plantations and Kingsley’s earnings.
Before the militia raid of 1810, there was great prosperity in the plantations in East Florida. In the initial years of Spain’s re-control there was a lot of economic instability. However, gradually, reforms brought about improvements and a high level of stability. This was interrupted with invasion threats from the free black militia’s that were employed by the governor to ensure security in the area.
