Creativity and learning in Schools
Schools are important institutions in the lives of our children. They not only provide our children with educatio
n, they also prepare them for life. Schools offer the necessary space for learning, socializing and growing. They must thus be designed in such a way so as to encourage learning, in life and career. Schools must prepare children in multiple ways for ensuring their success in the future. While schools have successfully imparted knowledge to students since early on, areas such as creativity and development have been largely ignored. The emphasis instead has been scores with assessment systems that are not very indicative of creative thinking or thinking beyond the textbook.
Schools have both manifest and latent functions. Manifest functions of schools refer to those functions that the schools are expected to perform and they do, for example, imparting academic education to children. Latent functions of schools refer to those functions that the schools perform without intent. Example of latent functions of schools can be day care for children, opportunities for them to socialize, opportunities for physical activity and well-being, opportunities to find romantic partners etc. Thus schools exhibit both functions which are conducive to the development of students in multiple ways.
