The objective of this section is to demonstrate 1.0 Plan and develop operational procedures



Case Study 1


Attached for your information is a Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) for manual handling. Named “The Six Steps of Lifting” this can be located with the National Training Dashboard under the banner of National Camper Trailers > Human Resources > WHS.


This is specifically a lift of a cardboard box weighing less than 10Kgs.


In your role as the Warehousing Manager at National Camper Trailers Pty Ltd. responsible for the Receival and Storage of materials and product, as well as despatch of completed products and accessories. The materials and products coming in from offsite manufacturers and suppliers.


Your Receival and Storage Team numbers ten employees and covers a diverse makeup of Male and Female, English speaking and English as a Second Language members.


The CEO has become aware of several Manual Handling class injuries among your staff. He has requested you to take some actions to ensure that we as a company are taking every effort to not hurt anyone entering our site.


From meetings to discuss this issue the first requirement we need is to create an SOP for Manual Handling of Cardboard Boxes 10 - 20Kgs, and Less than 10 Kg.


You must develop this report then up-load to your assessment. When developing this SOP take into account the following factors and account for each one in your SOP.



Question 1


Create a Manual Handling Operational Procedure for Stock movement for 10 - 20Kgs, and Less than 10 Kg.


a. Explain the Processes required for development/modification of operational procedures and identify and confirmed with relevant personnel and other units within National Camper Trailers?




b. Ensure that your SOP contains the following concepts, define them in relation to this operational procedure, and list the relevant personnel that would be involved to discuss and validate this SOP.

Write a report which states the following in relation to the development of your SOP.


a. Based on the attachment SOP, was the current procedure evaluated to ensure development is not unnecessarily duplicating previous work.




b. What factors did you utilise and found likely to impact on the development process, identify them and the techniques you adopted for their incorporation into the SOP?




c. Show how you plan to trial the new operational procedures with a target group as required.




d. What KPIs are you able to develop to measure the effectiveness of the SOP?




e. Set up a plan to show how the SOP was developed, documented and verified with relevant internal/external personnel and/or organisations, in accordance with workplace procedures




f. Review the document, specifically looking at version control.




g. Explain within the SOP how it was researched using a range of sources and provision is made to include user input and how you communicated effectively with others when developing and maintaining the SOP?




h. Detail here how you assessed risks and hazards related to developing and this SOP and ways of controlling the risks involved.

The CEO has now requested a report based on the SOP you and your team developed to reduce manual Handling injuries in your department. He wants to incorporate the SOP into other areas of the business and requires to put this to other Department heads to discuss. He has asked you lead and compile another report to assist with this meeting. He has requested the following criteria be included within the report.


a. How would you plan the introduction of the SOP to for selected units’/job functions is planned with affected personnel to ensure understanding and the need for compliance?




b. How can we effectively introduce, induct and provide supervision to support personnel in implementing the new SOP?




c. What methods can we introduce to ensure that Personnel performance is monitored to ensure adherence to the SOP and to assess the requirement to modify the process?




d. After we have introduced the SOP to other work units, what form of feedback can be actively sought from personnel?




e. Why must we understand the resource availability including the competencies of individuals in the team/group when developing the SOP for ours and other work units?




f. Why do we need to have a contingency plan while developing the new SOP?

Case Study 3


Your Manual Handling SOP has now been in place within the work units of National Camper Trailers for 6 months. The CEO has come to your department with the latest Safety Figures. These figures show that the occurrence of Manual Handling injuries have decreased by 75 % since the incorporation of the SOP.


He wants these figures to continue to reduce in both your unit and the other units it is now in force in, but he has concerns that things could increase again if we are not vigilant. He asks you to look at systems that we can incorporate in all our SOPs to ensure that they don’t just sit in books. You need to answer for him the following questions. You can utilise the internet to alleviate his concerns.


a. How can you measure the Effectiveness of the SOPs are assessed against developed performance indicators?




b. What system can we put in place to ensure that our SOPs are modified/deleted as required, in accordance with evaluation mechanism and company requirements?
