INTRODUCTION
Today there are many environmental challenges experienced by the flora and fauna on earth. For example deforestation, scarcity of water, temperature extremes, pollution of air, water and soil, quality degradation of fresh fruits and vegetables, ozone layer depletion, increase in harmful toxic gases in the atmosphere, harmful exposure of carcinogens through UV radiations. These environmental changes adversely influence the human lives considerably (Cetron et al,2006).
Tourism largely depends on the availability of environmental resources. Clearance of vegetated areas to expand the resorts is generally done to satisfy growing demand for private and sheltered accommodations.
ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES
The two major globally significant environmental challenges for hospitality managers are Pollution and Scarcity of Energy Resources.
1. Pollution
Transport of visitors to various places of interest may add large quantities of dangerous emissions to the atmosphere. Pollution due to air transport is constantly rising every year by 5%. Keeping this in mind, air traffic is estimated to double in next 15 years consuming million tons of fuel, releasing enormous CO2 and NO gases (Naik,2014). Pollution of river bodies and open drainage systems may adversely influence the quality of water. For example in Malaysia, most of the rivers are highly or slightly polluted due to the dumping of untreated sewage in water bodies (Naik,2014). Hence, water quality is seriously deteriorating and population increase has triggered intense competition for the availability of water resources. With the development of more tourism resorts and hotels in future and increased urbanization, there will be growing pressure on availability of pure resources. In addition to satisfying cooking and drinking purposes, hotels consume water largely for leisure purposes like swimming pools, washroom requirements, and golf courses....
