Task

The purpose of this assessment is for students to plan for an investigation of an equity issue by drawing on their understandings of the first six topics of EEP101 subject content.

This assessment is a planning task that will enable you to receive feedback on your initial ideas for a final investigation of an equity issue for Assessment 2. This feedback will need to be incorporated into your final investigation report. The task requires each student to identify and describe an equity issue that is relevant to young children and/or families and to Early Childhoodand/orPrimary professionals.Students also need to identify how the equity issue:

  • can be understood/explained by one relevant sociological theory

  • is relevant to Australian Government policy aims and objectives.

The equity issue needs to relate specifically tooneof the topics covered in weeks 3 to 6 : 'social class', 'gender', 'ethnicity or Indigeneity', or 'rurality'. Remember, these topics themselves are not the equity issue, the equity issue will be a specific aspect of inequality that relates to one of these topics such as inequitable student outcomes/educational progress, inequitable access to educational or life opportunities, or inequitable levels of participation or well-being in educational experiences/settings.
In this task students will identify an equity issue and submit a maximum 500 word document outlining a description of the issue, and its relevance to students/families and teaching professionals and to policy (see assessment 1 rubric). This submission should be referenced to provide an indication of your early research.

This stage of your assessment should include the following (a template will be provided by your subject coordinator):

- Your understanding of the equity issue - written as a brief statement of the equity issue (1 - 2 sentences). Examples will be provided via our Interact2 site.

- What is known about the impact of the issue on children and families/consequences of the issue. This section will build onto your statement of the equity issue. The required readings will be appropriate sources from which to draw this information. Provide at least one in-text citation in this section.

- Some evidence of the equity issue - this will be found in the required readings. You will need to cite at least one reliable source that supports the existence of the equity issue you have identified. Consider statistical evidence or research-based evidence (findings from research) that relate to what is known about the impact of the issue on children and families.

- One sociological theory that can be used to understand/explain your equity issue. Again, you do not need to go any further than our subject readings when identifying a relevant theory for each topic and its related equity issues.

- Identification of 1 - 2 Australian Government policy/ies that are relevant to your equity issue and briefly explain how they are relevant eg. relevant aims and objectives of the policy/ies (draw on the Week 6 readings and lecture for this section).

- References list - not included in the overall word count. See Requirements section or our Interact2 site for links to APA referencing guides.

Your plan should be no more than500 wordsin length and is worth 10 marks for the subject.

The final date for submission of Stage 1 is Wednesday 21st August 2019.Submission will be via EASTS. If you complete and submit this task early, please notify your Subject Coordinator. Students who submit earlier may be able to receive feedback earlier.

This task will be marked and feedback provided to support you with writing your final report.Feedback from your marker will be provided via EASTS within one week of submission. NB. It will be important to start Assessment 2 while you are waiting for this feedback.

Permission to proceed with your selected topic will be provided from your marker. Unsatisfactory plans (less than 5 marks) will require revision according to marker feedback and resubmission for final approval. Your marker will provide resubmission details.

Rationale

  • be aware of conceptual frameworks for understanding family issues of relevance to curriculum, pedagogy and service provision.

  • be aware of how social, political and educational policies and practices affect children and families.

  • have developed an awareness and appreciation of diversity in Australian society and understand how equity of access and participation affects the quality of educational provision.
