Indigenous and non-indigenous peoples’ historical positioning
Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginals form the indigenous groups of human beings in Australia. Before the British colonisation, different indigenous groups existed leading to their expansion that mainly formed the Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders. Despite their common originalities, indigenous groups have different cultures that are widespread across Australia. Over time, there has been a mix of cultures, languages and customs. When the European settled, it was estimated that 250 languages existed. However, there are around 120 languages still being used. Currently, English is mainly used by many people as opposed to their Aboriginal languages. Aboriginals comprise of different groups such as the Koori, Mirrawarri, Ngunnawal, Murray, Goorie, Nyungar and Nunga. On the other hand, the Torres Strait Islanders have a distinct cultural and heritage history from the traditions seen amongst the Aboriginals.
