Referring to ‘Trauma Informed Care’ - Identify three (3) ways you can help children to recover from a traumatic event. PART B CASE STUDIES Read the following Case Study and the extract from BB’s Early Childhood Education and Care Service, Child Protection Policy, and then answer the questions that follow. Case study 1 A new family, the Smiths, started at BB’s Early Childhood Education and Care service a month ago, they have a three (3) year old son Johnny (date of birth 8.4.2013). Johnny is in full time care in your group (Bumble Bees). Johnny is a very quiet child, small for his age and quite thin. At your service the parents provide all of the children’s food. The food that Johnny’s mother sends is not sufficient for a whole day, for example yesterday all he had in his lunchbox was a packet of Maggi Noodles. You often have to make an ‘emergency sandwich’ for him. You also have to keep an eye on him at mealtimes as Johnny watches what the other children are eating and will try to grab food from their lunchboxes. It’s difficult to have a proper conversation with Johnny’s mother (Delia) as the service bus transports him to and from the centre. The Nominated Supervisor (Director Renee Kaur) has phoned his mother about the food she provides but his mother says Johnny is a ‘fussy’ eater and he doesn’t like lots of things. The Nominated Supervisor said that his mother seemed unconcerned that Johnny might be hungry. Johnny’s body and clothing is dirty and he always smells of urine. You and the other staff have started to give Johnny a shower each day and you put clothes on him from the spare clothes box. For the last few days he has arrived still wearing the same spare clothes, unwashed from the previous day. You’ve also noticed that Johnny constantly seems tired. Today 24.5.16, when Johnny arrived at 8.00am, he immediately came up to you and said he was hungry. You looked in his lunchbox and it was empty so you made him a sandwich. As he was eating he said ‘We got no food at home’. POLICY EXTRACT: BB’s Early Childhood Education and Care Child Protection Policy Procedure: Make an objective professional record of the indicators observed or disclosed that have led to the belief that there is a current risk of harm to a child or young person detailing your observations. Remember this should be without any editorial comment, suppositions, interpretations, or allegations. Immediately,

PART A
1.
a) Child abuse can take many forms. Some types of abuse include: physical, sexual, emotional, neglect (which included exposure to family and domestic violence). Identify three (3) possible indicators of each type of abuse.
Indicators of physical abuse (For example: unexplained bruising)
Three possible examples of indicators that implies physical child abuse are bites, rashes or cuts that are unexplained.
Indicators of sexual abuse (For example: bruising of genital areas)
Three possible examples of indicators that implies sexual abuse of a child are plumped lips, rashes in inner thighs, bleeding from genital areas.

Indicators of neglect (For example: malnutrition)
Three possible examples of indicators that implies neglect of a child are illness, skin problems and malnutrition.
b) List three (3) possible effects/impacts of harm from abuse and neglect.
Possible effect/impact of harm (For example: developmental delays)
Mental trauma, attention seeking nature, rough behaviour are the three possible effects of harm from abuse or neglect.
2. The causes of child abuse are complex and there is no single or simple explanation. List three (3) of the factors that may contribute to the likelihood of abuse occurring (For example; Alcohol/Substance abuse).
Intake of drugs or alcohol, anger management issues and inhumanity are the factors that may contribute to the likelihood of abuse occurring.
3. There are three (3) formal ways that a child might disclose that they are being abused. Research these disclosures and give one (1) example for each which demonstrates your understanding of this type of disclosure.
Direct Disclosure:
A child approaching someone trusted and explaining the specific incident loud and clear is considered as direct disclousure. Example: “my uncle touches my private parts when my parents are not around”.
Indirect Disclosure:
Disclosure made with two or more ambiguous statements that indicates that something is wrong is called indirect disclosure. For example, “I have a cousin who I know is being abused.”
Disclosure with Conditions:
If a child shows signs of abuse that are physically evident like cuts or burns it is known as disclosure with conditions. For example when a child shows a cut mark and says, “my uncle touches my private parts when my parents are not around”
4. Briefly explain why it is important to use non-leading and open-ended questions when responding to a child’s disclosure? Give an example of this by providing two (2) questions that might be appropriate to ask a child who has disclosed information about abuse.
Why it is important:
An open ended question would lead to the disclosure of many important information that has not been disclosed yet which can be useful for the case. That is why open ended questions are important.
Example 1:
“How do you think things started to become uncomfortable between you and him?
Example 2:
“What are the things that he did to you?”
5. How would you respond to a child who has disclosed an allegation of abuse? (For example; find a quiet/private place to talk with the child).
A child who has just disclosed an allegation of abuse to me, I will make sure that I don’t hurt the child in any way and keep up the trust they put in me, try to know the details first and make sure they are protected and kept away from the person the complained against.
6. What child protection legislation would you refer to in Queensland?
There is an act called Child Protection Act 1999 that ensures wellbeing, safety and interest of a child. I would refer to that.
7. What is the definition of mandatory reporting?
The requirement of placing a report in case of child abuse or neglect to a government authority for some specific classes of people is known as mendatory reporting.
8. Research the Mandatory Reporting requirements affecting employees in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) Services.
List the ECEC professionals who are mandated to report.
Nurses, doctors, teachers and policy officers are the professionals who are mandated to report.
What type of abuse are these professionals mandated to report?
Physical abuse, emotional abuse and sexual abuse and neglect are the kind of abuses that these professionals mandated to report.
9. What are the relevant agencies that you may be required to work with when reporting harm?
The relevant agencies that I may be required to work with when reporting harm are different child welfare organizations, NGOs and government authorities.
10. How would you collaborate with these agencies to ensure your report is effective?
I will be honest and as descriptive as possible and do my best to ensure that I am providing them with enough information to continue with the investigation.
11. Explain in your own words what the term trauma means?
When a child undergoes violence, it stays in their brain for a long time and continues to haunt them. They start getting anxious about what will happen to them if this incident gets repeated and it leads them to experience mental trauma. So, the term trauma is a mental disorder that may be permanent or temporary and is caused due to witnessing unexpected violent situations.
12. Young children who have been traumatised are not able to describe how they feel in words and tend to express themselves through behaviour....
