Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment (i.e. AVETA’s simulated workplace environment) where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced by individuals using interpersonal communication skills in a workplace and include access to:

• equipment, materials and business software packages for making a presentation

• business technology

• interaction with others

Assessment Task 1 – Case Study Student Assessment Information

For this Assessment Task, as a Case Study, you will be required
to prepare and deliver a presentation
relating to a role of a
Sous Chef
in a fully operational commercial kitchen to your Assessor.

This will require you to utilise and demonstrate the use of:

effective presentation strategies and communication principles

§ Assessment Tip:
effective presentation strategies
could include but not limited to the eight following points:

§ 1.
Share your personal journey. Nothing is worse than a presenter who doesn’t allow the audience to get to know them as a thought leader. One of the best ways to connect with your audience is to share your story with them. How did you come to be in the position you are today? What makes you credible on this topic?

§ 2.
Use stories. One of the best ways to engage your audience is to share client success stories, case studies, and examples

§ 3.
Incorporate statistics. One of the best ways to show your credibility to the audience is to incorporate research and statistics. These figures can come from external sources, or you can create your own statistics.

§ 4.
Be humble. Speakers can quickly turn off an entire audience if they are too egotistical or unable to convey their humility. This means sharing with the audience how you or your company gives back and why the work you do aligns with your vision and mission. Let the success stories show what you can do for them. In sales, they teach under‐promise and over‐deliver — the same is true in presentations.

§ 5.
Create a flow. Presenters must be conscious of the audience’s experience. The flow of a presentation brings the audience down a clear path. The best speakers start by introducing the concept, outlining the importance of the topic, breaking down the components, clarifying the action steps, and concluding the section. There are many other flows you can use, but this example works well for new presenters.

§ 6.
Engage with PowerPoint. The rule of thumb with your PowerPoint is that it must be engaging, not distracting. The best PowerPoint presentation is one that overviews the concepts you are discussing, incorporates graphics, charts and illustrations to engage the audience, and potentially even brings in cartoons and other sources of comedy for added entertainment.

§ 7.
Hold questions until the end. Request the audience hold on to their questions until the end. Allowing questions in the midst of a presentation often throws off the flow and thought process of the presenter.

§ 8.
Make content a priority. The best presenters provide so much high‐quality content and value, the audience wants to know how to get more. Provide your audience with your best content and to position yourself as the go‐to‐expert in your field.

§ 9.
Practice!
Magicians practice endlessly at sleight of hand to make their tricks seem effortless. You probably do not need to practice quite as much, though you should take time to be comfortable with the presentational aids you are using.

BSBCMM401 Make a presentation – Summative Assessment Tool

§ Assessment Tip:
communication principles
could include but not limited to the following:

§
Understand yourself. Understanding who you are and what your natural tendencies are is the first step to being an effective and genuine communicator. Do you tend to be chatty? Are you assertive? Are you direct? Do you choose your words carefully? Another part of understanding yourself is to be clear about your values and goals, both in general and in the context of each communication. When you are clear on why you’re communicating, your

genuine self will shine through and add credibility and vigour to your communication.
After all, being “real” leads to more effective communication.

§
Understand your audience. As important as it is to understand yourself, it is also important to understand your audience and their natural tendencies, motivations, goals, challenges, and opportunities. How much time does your audience have? Another part of understanding your audience is to be clear about their values and goals.

aids and materials to support the presentation

§ Assessment Tip:
aids to support the presentation
could include but not limited to the following:

§ Presentational aids are... are items other than the words of a speech that are used to support the intent of the speaker. In particular, they can be visual aids, audio aids or other supporting technology.

§ Visual aids include projectors, physical objects, photographs, diagrams, charts and so on. Audio aids include music, conversations, recordings, etc. Technology that can be used includes computers, lights, microphones and recorders.

§ Actually, the name 'presentational aid' is not the best description as, whilst they do help the presenter, their main purpose is to help the audience.

§ Assessment Tip:
materials to support the presentation
could include but not limited to the following:

§ Photographs ….. provide a picture of reality and are easily included in slides where they can be used illustrate a point or just provide a background. They are good for illustrating action, evoking emotion and more. When you show a person doing something, your audience may well empathise with the image, putting themselves in the place of that person.

§ A disadvantage of photos is that the important detail can be lost so it may be important to ensure they are projected on a large screen.

§ It is also important with photographs of people that any legal constraints, such as privacy laws, are considered. If in doubt, start by considering whether the person may or may not be happy to be in your photograph. Whilst it is often ok to have people in the background, when they are the subject and when you are using them to promote something, then you may be on difficult ground.

During this Assessment Task your Assessor will observe you when you are preparing for and delivering your presentation, specifically:

At the conclusion of your presentation ask your target audience (your Assessor) to complete your questionnaire regarding your presentation’s effectiveness (you will be required to utilise the contents of this questionnaire during Assessment Task 2)
