II. A Changing World
Three Major Aspects of New and Old World Exchange
The Spread of Diseases:
The massive life loss of the people from the New World (American continent and Oceania) due to the bringing of fatal diseases from the Old World (European, Asian and African Continents) had been one of the most significant aspects of the exchange between the New and the Old World. As stated by Costa, Canals, Potau and Ruano (2019), the exchange of diseases were devastating for the inhabitants of the New World as they were not exposed to diseases such as Measles, Small Pox, Chicken Pox, Malaria and Typhoid and many more fatal diseases.
It is worth the mention that the visitors from the Old World were not aware of the immunity-based issues of the New World inhabitants and the spread of diseases was unintentional. The spread of disease was large scale and Native American tribes such as Taino people of Hispanola islands extinct. Due to the contemporary lack of consideration for demographic details noting, it is estimated that major percentage of the natives in America died within the discovery of the continent by Columbus (Nunn and Qian, 2010).
Mercantilism:
As the process of exchange started between the New World and Old World, the political powers adapted mercantilism, which generated no scope of free trade as well as bilateral development of both sides. Instead, the powers in the Old World started colonizing New World and started draining the wealth of the New World to make the availability of the resources scarce in the New World countries. As mentioned by Beramendi, Dincecco and Rogers (2019), mercantilism observed in the exchanges between New and Old World not only started draining raw resources of the New World to the Old World, but also introduced new products on both sides, affecting the food habits and business the most.
It was found that the traders, who went to New World counties, came back with foods such as sugar, chocolate, tobacco and potatoes. Although the Old World was at the gain, they also introduced new ideas and products to New World. The introduction to horse as a medium of transport, the use of sugar plants, pigs and chickens, which became the sustainable sources of meat, which the natives accepted fast.
