Critique of Quantitative Article by Bond, Lusher, Williams and Butler (2014)
a. Overview of Quantitative Research Topic, Questions and Problem with Justifications
The current journal article by Bond, Lusher, Williams and Butler (2014), mentioned the overall research topic in a crisp and well segmented manner, as seen in the abstract section of the article, where it is clearly stated that an attempt to explore the new concepts of relational dissonance and friendship as significant influencers of positive and negative mental health. As mentioned by Boyd (2018), stating the main research topic in comprehensible manner makes the readers aware about the topic. The research problem is well stated and justified. From the details of the current research, it is known that positive and negative impact of social interaction and relational dissonance has not been assessed together as a combined factor therefore, creating the issue of improver assessment of positive and negative aspect at the same time. The current journal article by Bond, Lusher, Williams and Butler (2014) does not present a research questions and keeps the aspect dependent on the readers’ credibility.
b. Critical Assessment of Literature Review
The literature review section presented in the journal by Bond, Lusher, Williams and Butler (2014) remains very brief, highly variable oriented and struggles to offer in depth understanding for readers new to the concept of relational dissonance. The concepts of relational dissonance, role of relational dissonance in creating positive mental health has not been discussed and Bond, Lusher, Williams and Butler (2014) have only incorporate social network and mental health, negative impact of peer rejection and based on which, have inferred to the aspect of relational dissonance for positive and negative social connection. Bond, Lusher, Williams and Butler (2014) have also not used any heading and continued after the introduction section. As stated by Christianson (2018), lack of proper heading makes readers confused and misguided.
c. Assessment of Research Design
In the current research Bond, Lusher, Williams and Butler (2014) have used the correlational research designing. The authors of the current journal article have presented not any hypothetical research questions however; have used the implied research question for connecting different variables of the research topic. The authors have opted for inductive approach, where both positive and negative outcomes of relational dissonance has been discussed separately, combining at both at last to frame a new perspective, using correlational research design.
d. Critical Analysis of Research Method and Techniques
In the current journal article, the online quantitative survey is conducted on school students between the ages of 13 to 14 years for assessing the impact of peer interaction; love and rejection on the development of mental health condition both – positive and negative. Considering the context, the sampling is very well selected; however, the use of offline survey would have been better. Bond, Lusher, Williams and Butler (2014) have used Likert scale questions and a computer for the statistical data analysis and numerical data percentage determination, which is strength of the journal.
