1. Introduction
The development of Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) was inevitable as with the advent of time, the electronic hardware and software, formulating the information communication system and industry has attained rapid evolution towards betterment and gained immense popularity among the masses, becoming the most widely used communication medium expanding in several genres, such as compressed language, emails, blogs and image-micro memes. All the mentioned genres have evolved over the years and the linguistic features have changed depending on the development of newer technology and users’ needs. The current essay discusses and critically analyses the rapid evolution of compressed languages, which includes SMS, Tweets and Hashtag usage.

3. Changes Observed in Past and Present Linguistic Features of Compressed Messages
Starting with the SMS, it is found that in its primitive stages of its usage, it used only numeric and alphabetic characters to convey information and the provided information was very limited in nature as the contemporary technology had limited software and hardware support. As example small greetings, wishes and details were shared through SMSs, such as ‘Good Morning’, ‘Happy Birthday’, ‘Call back’, and many more, which in modern times transitioned into use of symbolic, animated, textual and numerical input forwarding facilities, which only the development of the technology enabled, as the needs of the users were not considered important.
As mentioned by Strong (2019), the change in the use of highly localised and abbreviated forms of text send through SMS has also been noted. The high popularity and awareness of the use of the communication system, allowed people with least education use the system, and in order to convey messages with ease and within the allowed limited character delivery, shortened forms such as ‘Good morning’ into ‘Gdmrng’ got into use.
On the other hand, the use of linguistic features on twitter and the tweets used on the social media platform has also catered ample changes in it. Firstly, the earlier messages on twitter used for conveying feelings were only alphanumeric, gradually included the use of emojis and icons, which helped in reaching people beyond traditional barriers of language differences such as, a crying emoji expressed the feeling of sadness more easily than in written words in English, which some people might not understand due to their language learning limitations.
Another major change in the Tweets has been the type of hashtags used. As noted by Carroll and Mari (2017), in the earlier times, the hashtags were used for naming important places, events, and people, for which average users searched. However, in recent times, the hashtags on tweets are used for developing groups to communicate better, as people with same hashtag usage get to see the...
