Oscillating Wave Surge (Pitch) Converters (OWSC)
Introduction:
The key objective of modern industrial society is to generate power from renewable sources economi
cally including wind, solar, hydroelectric, wave power and marine current. Unfortunately, none of these technologies are capable to meet global demand for energy, whence more efficient renewable power source needs to be developed. The wave power-based technology interest started to rise during 1970 oil crisis to overcome the heavy dependence on fossil fuel for power stations.
The system OWSC is developed based on analysis of LIMPET system results in novel shoreline (or) near shoreline wave energy converter. The hydrodynamics of shoreline wave energy is highly non-linear when compared to deep water as water particle motion in shallow water is horizontal since waves troughs are elongated having heightened peaks. The design of OWSC is able to withstand strong horizontal particle motion paving way for large amplitude (by motion) with minimal energy loss.
OWSC system is comprised of paddle functioning (rotating) in horizontal axis above water surface and perpendicular in direction to wave propagation. The effective water column between paddle and wall back (gully) is achieved by positioning the paddle at the mouth of gully and this system is similar to “Pendulor” (Japanese) system but OWSC uses water column resonance instead of harbour resonance principle.
Concept of Oscillating Wave Surge Converter:
There are many models of OWSC is available in market and the most primitive one comprised of hinge suspended paddle above water surface. This...
