The police appear under schedule 7 and it functions under the legal jurisdiction of Indian states. The policing system in India sources from the British rule in terms of operations, structure as well as performance of duties. The historic evidences suggest policing as the way to achieve law and order in society (Mohanty, 2018). However, due to the evolution of society and legal norms, the role of police has changed over the course of past few decades. Indian police reforms have taken place under reports sent during 1979 to 1981 on behalf of National Police Commission. The policy of reform is introduced in these reports, which were mainly eight in number. However, main reforms in policing system of India occurred after one of the former DGP of Uttar Pradesh filed public litigation in 1996. The Supreme Court of India, after having reviewed the suggestions made in this litigation, ordered a few reforms in 2006. These serve as the directives of reform to all states and Union Territories of Indian region (Ravikumar & Rahmathullah, 2020).
