Discussion 05.2: Memory Lane Contains unread posts Includes assessment. Must post first. Over the course of this quarter we have discussed both theoretical and practical frameworks.  You have been asked to develop a business plan, a cover letter, and a resume.  You have been asked to play the role of a hiring manager.  In this discussion provide two examples of how you have changed as a manager as a result of your studies in the Graduate Program.  Your response must be made using a minimum of three scholarly resources and be cited and referenced using proper APA formatting.  You must respond to a minimum of four of your fellow classmates. 1. Discussion 5.2: Memory Lane Guadalupe Garcia Mar 12, 2018 1:52 AM    Discussion 5.2: Memory Lane Because of my studies in the NAU Graduate Program, I have become a well-rounded manager. I have managed personnel and been a hiring manager before. However, I had never received any formal employee law training. Therefore, my confidence level was always lacking. This is for my post military supervisory and management positions. I have had numerous management training courses and development training and experience while in the military. Managing personnel and being a leader comes natural to me due to the many years of having been in a leadership position. It is much different once the policies and laws are new to you. With this program of study, I have learned many of the International Management policies and laws, Human Resource Laws, and Employee and Employer Laws to be a successful and competent manager. I have also changed as a manager by being more thorough and patience. The Graduate Program expects students to provide numerous references to cite sources for information used within the student papers. This process is what normally takes me a while to complete my assignments. Utilizing the university library to locate numerous references has taught me the patience that a manager requires to complete accurate paperwork and reports. Prior to this graduate program, I did not have this patience for completing paperwork. Because of this program and the studies I have taken throughout the past fifteen months, I have gained valuable knowledge and patience to be a better and effective manager for my subordinates. . 2. Memory Lane - Mark Bartik Mark Bartik Mar 8, 2018 4:42 PM    While I have worked as a leader, and manager before, most of that was in the military; I have found the military and business worlds are very different. Ballenstedt (2007), relates, military senior officials ranked higher in leadership, but not as high in management. The military often focuses much of its efforts on developing individuals as leaders, but in the civilian business world, there is more emphasis on organizational performance. This is understandable in that the military strives to ensure continuity of operations in case the worst should happen, which could at any time because of the very nature of the mission, there needs to be someone who can step in and take command. In the civilian world however, a business is more concerned with its bottom line, ensuring a profit and protecting the stakeholders. Much of my leadership training in the military was focused on taking care of people and motivating and inspiring them to accomplish the mission; this graduate program has taught me to take a more macro view of the business world, to see how everything within a business needs to support the strategic goals of the organization. I have also learned a lot about HR and how easy it would be for a business to get its self into trouble if it is not complying with HR laws. Many people think, the purpose of HR is to protect workers’ rights; that is true, but the primary purpose of HR, according to Kasperkevic (2017), is to protect the company. It just happens that sometimes the two align. For instance, in a case of sexual harassment, the company can get into trouble under federal law for allowing that behavior to continue, so they have to do something about the harasser, which, in turn, benefits the harassed employee. There are many things companies do and try to intimidate employees by telling them it is forbidden by company policy to do, like discuss your pay with other employees, however, under the National Labor Relations Act, according to the National Labor Relations Board (n.d.), a company is prohibited from having a policy forbidding these discussions. So, it is important for managers to be very conscious of labor laws to protect employees, and the company.    Ballenstedt, B. (2007). Study highlights differences between military, civilian leaders.
