Quality Improvement in the Health Care Organization Accreditation


The mandate for improving the way in which health care is delivered was stimulated by the public outcry over the estimated 98,000 deaths because of medical errors each year according to the Institute of Medicine in 1999. Since then, health care organizations have sought means by which the public can be reassured that they were meeting quality and safety standards. Accreditation agencies (e.g., The Joint Commission) and quality awards provide a means for the public to evaluate where the agency is meeting minimum standards.


You have been assigned by your manager to determine which accrediting agencies or quality improvement programs your hospital will utilize in its upcoming revenue cycle. Your hospital is a magnet hospital in a large urban area that provides multilayered services. You have previously used The Joint Commission for your accreditation but feel that you might be better served by using another accrediting body. You have three months in which to gather data and present the information to your manager.


Complete the following for this assignment:



  • Choose 3 quality improvement or accreditation-related programs to consider in replacing The Joint Commission for your organization, and briefly describe them. Your agency accepts Medicare and Medicaid payments; therefore, you will need to explore, as background, the conditions of participation for Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). This is important information because you will need to compare your list of accrediting agencies and quality improvement programs with the conditions of participation to see if they meet the criteria.

  • Analyze the costs and benefits of each quality improvement or accreditation-related program by stakeholder group (e.g., patient, provider, and third-party payer).

  • Rank your quality improvement or accreditation-related program suggestions with rationale.

Instructor needed that a student has a good understanding of the concepts that is being discussed. QUALITY IMPROVEMENT IN THE HEALTH CARE ORGANIZATION ACCREDITATION
Abstract
The current project aims to identify the most effective quality improvement programs of the present modern healthcare organizations, which have evidently brought up better results
for these centers. These programs are Electronic Health Record (EHR), Optimized Sepsis Care Program and Pharmacist-led Medication Therapy Management Program. These three programs have been individually assessed, along with comparing their pros and cons. After this comparison, it could be identified that HER holds the first position in terms of effectiveness for the quality improvement in healthcare centers, while Optimized Sepsis Care Program and Pharmacist-led Medication Therapy Management Program hold the second and third positions respectively.

Discussion Board
    Writing the comprehensive project developed the critical analysis skills in me. I had learnt to identify some of the best quality programs from the long lists of programs available. This selection of three most suitable programs required critical thinking and decision-making skills. I had developed both of them during the course of completion of the project. During reviewing the quality improvement programs and accreditation agencies, the use of critical thinking as well as decision-making skills had to be inculcated extensively. This helped in the analysis of the programs, their effectiveness and efficiencies from both negative as well as positive perspectives. Hence, viewing the situation became easier and helped in the enhancement of these skills. According to Greenfield et al. (2015), comprehensive project requires an extensive research from various sources, which required a lot of patience. Thus, conducting intensive research helped me in developing the quality analytical approach, which is crucial for management.
In practical application, implementation of any change in organization requires a comprehensive research, then selection of best three and at last, selection of most appropriate approach. This research project provided me the insight of the role, a manager pursues while the implementation of the project. The feedback given by my peers in earlier assignment allowed me to do improved research for the project.
These skills, which I had developed in completion of my comprehensive project, will allow me to run successful management of my organization. As supported by Wickersham and Basey (2016), critical thinking skills and decision-making skills are the most needed skills for the manager in completing their daily tasks. Apart from these, quality analytical skills allowed me to analyze the quality management of the organization regularly and implement the changes accordingly, which are necessary.
