1. How have documentary films been used to raise awareness and engagement about important public issues?
Yes, numerous examples are there in which documentary films have been used to raise awareness and create or increase awareness about important public issues. For example, in 1971, The Selling of the Pentagon was aired by CBS. It was a public affairs documentary which was aimed at the US military’s PR machinery. The documentary was much appreciated as it turned quite a few eyes within the administration and the pentagon itself. It even led to the Pentagon withdrawing some of the PR material already made available.
Even the 1967 Morley Safer’s Vietnam showed the true nature of the war and showed how that was different than what was being shown by the government. Even though that project never made it to the screen but it still shows the fact that it was used to raise awareness about important issues. Documentary filmmakers use their film as a baseline to represent what actually happened. It is not their version of the story but the actual story based on the facts that have been made available to them. And it is important for filmmakers to understand that as well as what they produce and bring to the final audience is not just a documentary but a baseline for all future generations on what actually happened.
