SH4007 Assessment 2, a 1,500 word report

Students should present a written report which identifies at least one social determinant of health and describe how it is being addressed in the selected area or setting which draws on your learning from the poster presentation and relates to the same selected area or setting. The work must demonstrate achievement of Learning Outcomes 3 and 4

Students should follow three key areas:




1. Student presents demographic information about the selected area and is able to identify one health and social care need; provide a clear account of the social determinants of health; identifies at least 1 social determinant in relation to the health and social care issue identified in the selected geographical area and can discuss this in relation to inequalities in health.




2. Student should identify a policy relevant to the health inequality addressed in the previous section. Student should then describe how the policy set outs to address the health inequality




3. Students should identify an example of
one
current public health intervention that is in place in the selected area which addresses the health inequality. Students should identify if the public health provision links to the policy recommendations.







Students should attend to correct academic presentation of their work. Work should be presented in report format, should have a clear structure with an introduction and conclusion. Correct academic presentation includes double spacing your work, and providing page numbers. Attention to carefully editing work for grammar and spelling. Students must follow the Harvard referencing system.

Introduction
Mental health is the state of wellbeing, where the potential of a person is identified. People with a good mental
health condition are able to handle all the pressure of the normal life, the stresses, they work and contribute towards the community’s wellbeing. However, there are many situations which leads to the mental health issues among the adults, which has serious implications over the society and the government. In this article a detailed discussion is done on the mental health issues and challenges faced by the adults of the Leicester city council. The discussion is done on the demographic profile of the adults affected, the social determinants along with the discussion is done on the policies regarding addressing the adult health and the public health provisions in the adult health care.
Demographic Profile
Mental illness can affect people in all stages of their life. According to the official website of Leicester government (2021) the number of people getting affected is estimated between the 3500 and 5250 children and the 3000 to 5000 older people in the Leicester city. In the local city area, there are around 34000 to 38000 working age adults, and they all suffer with certain kind of mental health disease. Among them there are around 3400 people, who have some serious mental illness, and they require immediate clinical attention. With respect to the children and young aged people, there is also many issues of mental illness, such as the inclusion of poor educational achievement, higher probability of suicide and the misuse of substance available to them, association with antisocial behaviour, the offending and the chances of early pregnancy are witnessed. This leads to the poor mental health in the childhood and adolescent, which can contribute to the poor health during their adulthood. This poor health outcome includes the mental illness, unemployment, low earnings, marital issues and disorder in conduct.
Health Issues
There are a number of health issues faced by the adults in their daily life because of the mental health problem. Subramaniam et al. (2020) have discussed that the adults face neurological disorders, such as dementia and depression. There are also many situations of anxiety disorders, which leads to self-harm and even death caused because of it. These kind of mental health issues creates other complications, such as heart disease, nervous breakdown, physical inability and many more. The mental health disorder also causes problems to the eyes, brain function and it also affects the speech pattern among the adults, which turns out to be irreversible ailment among them, and that leads to death.
Who is affected? Health Inequalities
There are a number of groups within the population of Leicester city council, who are at a very high risk of getting affected through mental health problems such as: those who are unemployed, the homeless people, the people with a long term condition, people who belong to the minority ethnic background and other minorities, such as those who belong with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender sexual orientation people. The people who are directly associated with the misuse of the substance, the people who are seeking asylum or refugees and the people who are victims of the perpetrators of the abuse or the crime. These are the people who are discriminated in the society and they belong to the weaker section of the society (Tromans et al., 2020).
Social Determinants of Mental Health
Societal norms create a division in the society, where the weaker section of the people are discriminated, which leads to the mental health issues among them. The social, environmental and behavioural aspects pose risk, which is caused because of the reduced options available to them, poor choices made in their life, high risk behaviours they represent and the stress faced by the people.
