Self-driving cars
Background on the topic
Self-driving cars continue to kill people. In the past few weeks, one person ran into an obstacle on the highway and the other ran over a pedestrian. This will inevitably lead to great troubles in the ethics of the algorithms that drive the autonomous vehicles (Coelingh, Nilsson and Buffum, 2018). “When we think about driving autonomous cars, we actually have to program them to respond. The robot has no intuition.” This raises the question: Do you have to decide in advance which way you want to turn, which one would you use? Way to turn?
Typical examples of this ethical dilemma often include choosing to turn to a school bus full of children or to choose to ride a motorcycle. Choice depends on the risks to others and the risks to you (Shubbak, 2013).
For decades, philosophers have been discussing the problem of trolleys like this. This is a useful thought experiment to test our intuition about the moral difference between doing and hurting. The manual scheme allows us to ignore empirical questions that may cast a moral oversight. For example, can the car stop in time? Can you avoid collisions in another way?
Ethical issues
Much of the discussion and ethical thinking about autonomous vehicles is focused on tragic dilemmas, such as assuming that a car must decided whether to run through a team of school children’s and jump off cliff to kill its personal passengers (Surden and Williams, 2016). However that situation is an extreme situation. The car is never allowed to drive automatically on the street. If the technology of self-driving cars develops well, non-autonomous vehicles will never be banned.
