fully stated by Anita Goel, “The next generation of health care will be decentralised, mobilised and personalised. Instead of the blunt instrument of the past, we will be giving patients the more precise medications and therapies”. With the modern and digitally advanced generation, the healthcare is also trying to develop its basic structure in order to provide the best to the patient for their wellbeing.
One of the famous innovation and transformation leaders of ALTEN Cal Soft Labs, Somenath Nag stated that “Mobile health is an attractive solution that leverages the ubiquity of mobile devices to address one of the most pressing global challenges- making healthcare more accessible, efficient and affordable.” Keeping these ideas in mind, this paper will highlight the evaluation of two most important health digital tools in Australian context— WebMD and Smiling Mind.
Background Information
WebMD is a very popular app in Australia, which guides its users towards a healthy lifestyle and all types of medical support to avail medical services whenever needed. Presently, telemedicine is an exploring area of digital healthcare. As stated by Weinstein et al. (2018), it has the ability to conduct the visit remotely by applying its secured video as well as audio functions, which has numerous benefits for patients and providers. The patients in this regard can skip the crowded waiting rooms, avoid missing the work hours, transport expenses, time, energy, in order to consult with the trained registered physicians through mobile or other digital application. In such a case, WebMD also act as a telemedicine support, which provides fact sheets and recipes to stay healthy as well as strong (Reach Out, 2021).
Another important and one of the most renowned digital tools in the Australian healthcare sector is the Smiling Mind. This is a meditation app for the youth, which enhances calmness, clarity of mind and mental satisfaction (Reach Out, 2021). Now, this is a very relevant app for health and wellbeing of many patients, especially those with diabetes, because in diabetes, people tend to become very much demotivated with their living conditions as well as lifestyle, and thus, they would need help to calm their minds down. As stated by Bookwalter (2019), along with Blood Glucose Level (BGL) monitoring, it is very important that the patients keep their calm and be sound psychologically, because the BGL is intricately related to the amount of mental stress one has.
Primary Objective
As stated by Socarras et al. (2020), telemedicine is also termed as telehealth or e-medicine, whose main objective is to deliver medication, consultation, examination, various tests over the telecommunication infrastructure. WebMD allows the healthcare providers to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients without the need for an in-person visit (Reach Out, 2021).
On the other hand, Smiling Mind reveals the individual pattern of BGL changes due to stress and helps the individual to plan their meals, activities and guide them when to take medicines. As stated by Kermani et al. (2017), this digital tool helps to provide the quick and accurate response to high BGL as well as low BGL and therefore helps the patient to maintain their diet accordingly. Smiling Mind in this regard can be the best tool, which provide relaxation and frees the person from anxiety, thus, being the best for the diabetic as well as obese people (Reach Out, 2021).
Secondary Objectives
Secondary common telemedicine program objectives are: improving the outcomes of patients, improving the patient convenience, reducing the cost of delivery, patient engagement as well as satisfaction, reducing hospital readmission, improving specialist efficiency, provides remote and rural patients with access to care and many more. WebMD acts as a telehealth program, which provides interactive tips for the patients to stay healthy (Reach Out, 2021).
Secondary common digital stress relieving tool objective is that it helps both the patients and the doctors to identify how well the medication is working. Thus, Smiling Mind reduces anxiety about the blood sugar level, helps to understand the concept about hypoglycaemia and keeps them happy (Reach Out, 2021).
