Reflection is an important part of nurses' personal and professional development in order to keep up with the changing nature of practise. It allows nurses to enhance their abilities, ensuring safe and effective evidence-based care continually. Gibbs reflective cycle model is popular among nurses because of its simple cyclical form. It is beneficial because it emphasises the connection between reflection and action (and this can assist in setting a personal development plan).
However, it does not demand an investigation of intentions, values, knowledge or conjecture, nor does it stimulate consideration of other persons involved in (or affected by) the event. While action-oriented and hence relevant for career development, it may not stimulate deeper self-reflection, limiting personal growth.
