Design of Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger
Introduction
Shell and tube heat exchangers are built up of ro
und tubes mounted in large cylindrical shell
with tubes parallel to the shell. These are called as surface condensers. They are widely used as oil
coolers, steam condensers, pre-heaters in power plants, as steam generators in nuclear power plants,
chemical industry and process applications. In these heat exchangers, the heat transfer takes place as
one of the fluid flows in the tube and the other fluid flows outside the tubes through shell. Baffles are
used to create turbulence, thus enhances the heat transfer rates. (Singhal) (Ghosal)

Configurations of Heat Exchangers are defined by the Tubular Exchanger Manufacturers Association
(TEMA).

Generally tube diameter of sizes of ¾” OD and ¼” OD are used. Small diameter tubes are used for
greater heat transfer. The thickness of pipes are estimated using Brimingham Wire Gage (BWG)....
