Introduction
Definition social research
Social Research is a system used by the researchers or social scientist to gain knowledge about publics and societies, so that they can able to provide various needs of the individuals in the society by designing various products and services. Different socio economic groups belonging to different parts of the country think differently.
It is essential to identify the human behaviour so as to understand their thought process and response about the social world. This can be done using social research technique.
Social research is done in a systematic way by following a constructive plan which includes qualitative and quantitative observation designs (Shackman, Gene,2009)
· Qualitative methods – This method focuses on direct observation such as communicating directly with the members of the market or analysis of texts for understanding social phenomena. The results of this method emphasizes on the accuracy instead of generalising related to quality.
· Quantitative methods - This method focuses more on the statistical analysis systems to calculate data accumulated via questionnaires or poll and surveys. Therefore, quantitative method uses quantifiable evidences to understand the social phenomena to generate reliable general and valid claims related to quantity.
Although methods can be segregated as qualitative and quantitative but most methods cover the elements of both the designs.
Importance of social Research
Social research can benefit the society in number of ways. Let us have a look on the benefits it can cater to the society:
1. It helps to formulate different laws and policies for the betterment of society based on the data and evidences provided by the researcher.
2. It gives a true and fair picture of the society by collecting data and not by generalising which helps in social planning.
3. It eradicates any misinformation or misconception about which might affect the society at large and therefore provide solution for social problems.
Social Issue
In this assignment we are going to discuss about a very prevalent social issue i. e same sex marriage or relationship.
The most heated debates in today’s scenario is whether and how same sex relationships effect the society, well-being and health of individuals who are in same sex relationships and their family. Many social scientist have conducted research that compare same and different sex relationships across a range of outcomes (Peplau & Fingerhut, 2007; Rothblum, 2009), and many legal and critical decisions have been taken based on the evidences of such research’s that affect the children of the same sex partners ( e.g American Sociological Association, 2013; DeBoer v. Snyder, 2014; Hollingsworth v. Perry, 2013 ). Although the debates on same sex relationships has been greatly effecting the population yet the scholars have very limited data and methods, who are studying same sex relationship and its impact on the society. In this assignment will know how same sex relationship has impacted the society at large based on the data provided by some social scientist. Most of the analyses are done based on quantitative methods and probability sample. Social researchers analyse data accumulating from persons in same sex relationships ( e.g Joyner, Manning, & Bogle, 2013), but there are also a number of nonprobability surveys which includes quantitative and qualitative that involves data from persons within couples ( e.g Moore, 2008; Totenhagen, Butler, & Ridley, 2012). Both of the methods are crucial for enhancing the understanding of same sex relationship.
