OAD130 Social Media Project This project is worth 25 percent of your final mark. Choose ONE out of the three project options below. You will present your project to the class on April 15 the day it is due. Presentations should be about 5-10 minutes in length. You will be marked on your product and presentation. Option A: Write a Blog A blog is defined as “a regular feature appearing as part of an online publication that typically relates to a particular topic and consists of articles and personal commentary by one or more authors” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). Blog posts are typically: · Written in first person · A collection of thoughts or expertise on a variety of topics · Inclusive of links, pictures, videos · Accessible online for free to the public · Searchable in search engines · Updated frequently · Open for reader engagement through comments, likes and shares Write a blog on any topic of your choosing. Topics can include digital marketing, social media marketing, a personal story, advice, or any other topic. All topics must be approved by the instructor. You must publish your blog on your LinkedIn account as a LinkedIn published article. Student blog posts should: · Be 500-1,000 words in length · Have a compelling title · Have a clear focus · Use relevant keywords, images (videos or hyperlinks if appropriate) · Be original, well-crafted, and well-informed · Well written without errors Option B: Design a Website A website is defined as “a group of World Wide Web pages usually containing hyperlinks to each other and made available online by an individual, company, educational institution, government, or organization” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). Good website design comes down to taste; however, some basic rules apply. Good websites target users and ensure the web pages are easy to use. Websites typically: · Identify users and purpose · Include webpages · Have a consistent screen layout · Have visual appeal · Utilize colour and layout to project image · Updated frequently · Incorporate feedback from users Use a website creator (WordPress, Wix, Weebly, etc.) to create your own personal website. Before choosing a website creator, research and compare website builders. Take a look at website builder comparison charts. Do not purchase or buy anything. Use free trials or packages. Link the website to your LinkedIn account. Student websites should: · Include an ‘about’ page or section that describes who you are, your skills, goals, etc. Think of it as a two-paragraph elevator pitch. · Include photos, videos, etc. that highlight your achievements or interests and express your professional personality. · Be creative, have a thoughtful layout and show mastery of the website builder. · Include a webpage that is a brief commentary (250 words) on your experience of designing the website, pros and cons, ideal use, support and tutorial, pricing of using the website creator you chose. · Include two additional webpages of your choice. Option C: Research a Social Media Platform Social Media is defined as “forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (such as videos)” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). Social media platforms typically: · Provide free web space · Ask members to build profiles · Encourage uploading of content · Allow live chats · Facilitate direct messaging Research a lesser known social media platform of your choice (Flixster, Foursquare, etc.). Verify your choice with your instructor before starting the project, and then create a document of your choice using desktop design features to educate your audience about your chosen platform. You must post your document to your LinkedIn account. Student social media document should: · Discuss the pros and cons of the platform. · Explain its ideal use (business, personal, etc.), what industry does this platform best suit. · Explain how it works, what kind of content and conversations are shared. · Ease of use, pricing, number of users, audience profile of who is using it (names of companies, organizations, etc.). · Clearly state how you can use the platform to enhance your social media network presence, what makes it effective or ineffective, why you would or would not recommend this platform to someone wanting to increase their social media presence. · Any other information you feel is important or interesting for your audience to know. · Include images, colour, well planned, with an effective layout and design. · Acknowledge resources used, cite sources if directly quoting or using images someone else created. **ALL PROJECTS AND PRESENTATIONS ARE DUE APRIL 15** Page 2 of 3
