Overview of the Sustainable Development Goal
Gender equality, which is represented in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5), is the foundation of the overall global effort to envision a more just and fairer planet. Fundamentally, SDG 5 aims to end deeply embedded gender discrimination in all sectors, and this includes education, employment, politics, and access to resources (Leal Filho et al. 2023). Despite remarkable progress after the SDGs’ adoption in 2015, the problems are only growing deeper. Women and girls are particularly vulnerable to discrimination, violence and prejudice which limit their full participation and empowerment.
Policy reform, legislative changes as well as interventions at the grassroots level constitute an integral part of the mechanism to enhance gender equality (Leal Filho et al. 2023). The governments, international organizations, civil society, and the private sector have been adding their voice behind initiatives focused on destroying gender stereotypes, advancing women’s rights, and building an inclusive environment that allows both women and girls to thrive. From enacting legislation to combat gender-based violence to implementing affirmative action to encourage women's participation in decision-making roles, there has been a solid level of incremental yet important development.
Nevertheless, the COVID-19 pandemic has particularly depicted the vulnerable state of gender equality and women suffer most from this global pandemic. In the context of the global recovery from the pandemic as well as socioeconomic setbacks, it is imperative to accord gender-responsive policies and investments that identify women's and girls' specific needs and challenges (Leal Filho et al. 2023). Through the promotion of gender equality, the world can unleash the hidden potential, boost inclusive development, and speed up the process of attaining all SDGs Although the journey still continues, it entails the undeviating determination, collaboration, and joint efforts in order to get to a place where there is nobody behind.
Strides made in promoting gender equality
So far, as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were developed and adopted in 2015, it is really obvious that significant gains have been noticeable in women's empowerment and gender equality globally. Women's rights advocacy, prevention of gender-based threats, and women's involvement in leadership have been recognized as a key issue hence constant efforts to advance gender equality have been made to progress (Ardra et al. 2022). Legislation, policies, and advocacy campaigns facilitate this process by enlightening society as well as destroying structures that tie women down and alienate them from leadership.
On the one hand, well-intended recent innovations still confront many obstacles on the route to complete equality between men and women (Ardra et al. 2022). Gender imbalances sow the seeds of gender discrimination in different realms of life such as education, employment, healthcare, and political disaggregation. Women and girls’ members of society face the least privilege due to the barriers in the system caused by various types of norms, gender and access to resources and opportunities (Ogunmakinde et al. 2022). The hugeness of gender-based violence still persists in many parts of the world; millions of girls and women are mistreated with the use of physical, sexual, and psychological abuse each year.
Particularly, the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed and made existing gender disparities more severe, increasing the number of unprivileged people and girls and giving them a higher vulnerability (Ogunmakinde et al. 2022). On top of school closures, and loss jobs and of other businesses, such problems have emphasised the disparity in the fields of income level, healthcare coverage and decision-making.
It is therefore important that actions are taken that will bring about gender equality, and that governments, civil society, the private sector, and the international community work together towards this common goal. Putting girls-oriented policies in a priority list, increasing education investments for women, toughening legal frameworks to protect women's rights and ensuring female involvement in decision-making are the key strategies in the struggle for a fair and equal world (Voola et al. 2022). Being a victim of such kind of discrimination society would find half of its population unable to share the full of its ability because of this kind of approach (Voola et al. 2022). Therefore, the possibility of having a brighter future with more prosperousness and sustainability will be a little difficult to fulfil.
Gender disparities still exist in various aspects of society
Though much progress has been witnessed in the drive for gender equality since 2015, still existing gender gaps are present in different dimensions of society. In the domain of education, numerous girls from various regions of the world run through obstacles to entry and cannot access quality education which limits their learning potential and their future prospects (Carlsen et al. 2022). Gender employment gaps still exist, whereby women face pay inequality, occupational segregation, and fewer chances of getting positions in upper management. It is, however, women who still hold the heaviest load since they are the ones mostly saddled with unrewarding unpaid care work that stifles their economic involvement and participation.
In the field of healthcare, the gaps in access to crucial services and resources shut women out of reproductive rights, women's health around pregnancy, and overall wellness.
