Directions: This final exam is worth 30% of your course grade and is scored at 100 points. Questions are grouped by type (multiple choice, true-false, short answer, etc.). The point value of each group and question is identified below. Short Answer / Definition Questions (15 points; 5 points each): Please choose three of the following five words to define and state the author/text read in class that has helped you come to this definition: - Commodity, Fetish, Desire, Freedom, Sign. Mid-Length Answer / Concepts & Theorem Questions (40 points; 10 points each): Please choose four of the following five questions to answer: - 1. According Jennifer Craik, “fashion is a technology of civility.” What do you think is meant by this, explain why? 2. Both Bell Hooks and Thuy Linh Nguyen Tu come to similar realizations, in their texts, that the inclusion of non-Western cultural aesthetics in fashion is rarely altruistic. What explanation for this do the authors offer? 3. Jennifer Craik and Roland Barthes both argue that fashion functions as a form of communication or language. What in their arguments alludes to this and how do you understand this language working? 4. In your own words, please explain how Stuart Hall’s concept of encoding/decoding works. 5. (a) Applying what both Roland Barthes and Stuart Hall outline of ‘the study of visual language,’ please read the connotative/denotative meaning in one of the following images. (b) Also, identify as least one visual sign, in the image, and explain the sign’s = signified/signifier. Long- length or Essay Question (45 points): Your answer must meet the basic essay standards of composition. It must include an introduction that identifies issues you will address and states a clear thesis, meet expectations for length, and be written in complete sentences and paragraphs using correct grammar. Please choose one of the following two essay questions to answer. Note your answer must extend onto at least 2 pages (single spaced, 12pt font) and include references & quotes from texts read in class to support your argument: - 1. Tim Dant provides us with a thorough genealogical analysis of the concept ‘Commodity Fetish’, noting that “…adding material things to the body achieves a merging of subject and object via fetishism because there is a ‘symbolic articulation of lack’.” What do you think the quote means and how do you see this applying to fashion and the fashion industry? Please reference real world example(s) and use as many class readings necessary to answer. 2. According to Roland Barthes, “Clearly meaning is not located in the finished object, it can be found in a tiny detail or in a complex outfit.” Please explain how you understand the quote as it relates to fashion as a language and the role of dress as an act of speech. Use as many class readings necessary to answer.
