3. Report on the Themes
Analysis of Theme 1: Prevalence and factors such as stress and lifestyle leads to tension among university students
The first factor, which influences tension, is academic and parental pressure. The job market now expects students to have the best grades and extracurricular activities. This checklist of achievements they have to accomplish is very stressful for the students. The second factor is the new environment. Often college students are living away from home and living on their own for the first time (Isoard-Gautheur, Ginoux, Gerber & Sarrazin, 2019).
This brings a new dynamic and they have to get used to perform all their chores on their own. This can be stressful to handle along with the academic pressure and curriculum to follow. Additionally this may increase in students who are from another country as they have got used to a different culture and in some cases have to rely on an entirely new language.
The third factor is the social aspect of college (Grover, Raju, Sharma & Shah, 2019). This affects the mental health and tension in students. As there is a huge pressure to make friends and this may be difficult for some students. Especially students from a different country may suffer the impact of the culture divide and different perspectives may be socially barrier. The need to make friends and start dating is very high and may add additional pressure on the student to give in to peer pressure.
Analysis of Theme 2: Incidence of depression leads to tension and stress among university students
Depression is one of the most common mental health diseases. In surveys conducted, it was seen that university students were more likely to have anxiety, depression or both. In a study conducted in India, the data suggested that education related difficulties as one of the major causes of depression. Relationship issues with parents or problems at home are seen as the major cause of depression. Economic difficulties is the third major factor seen as a cause of the disease (Grover et al., 2019).
Depression is rampant in the youth in universities due to the factors that were previously mentioned. Many of the students are unable to achieve the ridiculous standards that are placed on them. This pressure often affects their mental health as they feel that they are worthless and not as talented as their peers are. This adds more pressure on them and increases their standards that at times are not achievable.
This often pushes them to a cycle of feelings of unworthiness due to all this pressure and strain on them. They start not to perform well due to the feelings of depression as it often goes undiagnosed, which contributes to the vicious cycle of depression. This reduces productivity and affects the mental health of the students.
Analysis of Theme 3: Incidence of anxiety leads to poor university lifestyle
Anxiety disorders according to one study are the most prevalent mental health issues among the college students. Almost 12 percent of students suffer from anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders, social phobia, generalised anxiety disorders and panic disorders are some prominent examples. College is quite stressful for students. They have to deal with academic pressure, stressful tasks, separation, increased workloads and jobs.
This may force them to have high standards to accomplish and it will make them more susceptible to anxiety. They will start to become overly nit-picky about details and try to make sure it is all smooth. They may start overthinking various aspects of their life and this will lead them to have anxious thoughts about their current state and their future (Ellis, Dumas & Forbes, 2020).
Due to how diverse the students are and due to the issues they face being varied, there is no way to understand what triggers these mental health problems and what the main factors that contribute to it are. The problems of the student should be expressed with care and attention, as this is an important developmental stage and can affect how they act through their adulthood. It is important to be aware of the individual’s situation and the symptoms they have of the mental health problem (Pedrelli, Nyer, Yeung, Zulauf & Wilens, 2015).
Analysis of Theme 4: Pressure related to studies affect physical activity
The course work has recently increased in the last few years. Students have so many assignments on their plate and when they are trying to achieve that, they may not have time for physical activity. Many students have limited free time. They may use this time to get chores done and to socialise with their friends. Only a few students who are dedicated to a healthy lifestyle may ensure that they stick to a regular schedule and make sure they include physical activity in their regime (Stanton et al., 2020).
The pressure on their studies will make sure that they spend a lot of time on their assignments to ensure. The pressure also increases the number of unhealthy habits the students may engage in. Studies show that students tend to engage in activities such as binge drinking, binge eating, sleeping for a short period and not engaging any exercises.
This connection shows that the increase in academic pressure and parental pressure focuses the student attention only on one aspect of their lives. This is an unhealthy way of living and contributes to both physical and mental illnesses. This reduces the motivation students may have to engage in physical activities along with the time to engage in physical activities actually.
Analysis of Theme 5: Physical activity results in low stress level
Physical activity has a positive impact on a person’s health and wellbeing. This is both in terms of physical and mental health. Exercise causes the release of endorphins, which are also known as feel good neurotransmitters (Tsuruta et al., 2019). They give the person a feeling of happiness or a feeling compared to a natural high. It also provides relief from stress through decreasing the effects of stress that tit have on the body. Exercises allow the body to train for stress and be able to coordinate the systems in times of fight or flight situations. Exercises can also act as a form of meditation (Pedrelli et al., 2015).
It is a time for students to escape from the problems of their life and academic stress. While playing a sport or exercising, they only have to focus on the game for that span of time. This reduces the pressure the person is feeling and gives the brain the rest it needs to focus on other things. Regular Exercise also increases self-confidence and decreases symptoms of depression and anxiety. This means that exercise helps to reduce the effects of the problems that lead to stress and tension, this reduction ensures the student maintains a positive and optimistic mood.
Personal Reflection
Experience of interviewing and analysing the data
I personally agree with the points made by the various studies. I think that stress is something that is very prevalent among students especially in today’s day and age. The pandemic has also added an extra layer of stress and pressure. Staying at home and having classes has affected the education system. Students more than ever are struggling in classes and it is adversely affecting both their mental health and physical health. Now more than ever they are experiencing increased symptoms of anxiety and depression. Students have a lot of pressure on themselves as it is. In today’s climate, there are limited jobs for the number of students that are graduating.
Positive and negative aspect
The students have to be up to certain standards and need to get certain marks in order to get jobs and to be considered to progress in their career. The students have so many checklists to fill and so many activities to include them often have no time for anything else. The students spend most of their time on academic projects and academic endeavours. They often have no time for themselves. This limits the time they need to take to spend time with their friends, have a break and...
