Week 9 MC Discussion f21 Week 9 MC Trophy Kids/Trophy Nation Discussion 15pts Initial Reply due: Thursday 10.19 Reply (1) due: 10. 21 @ 11pm After watching the videos relating to the idea of trophies for all (Trophy Nation, Trophy Kids, etc.) do the following: Discuss what you learned in each of the videos. The state of play: Trophy Kids Trophy Nation Discussion Video The danger of participation trophies Special Report: Trophy Nation What themes did you notice across the discussions/videos? What were the arguments for and the arguments against the concept of trophies or ribbons for all and for heaping an abundance of superficial praise on children? Where do you stand on this issue? (Really think about how children develop socially, emotionally, cognitively, and physically. Think about how they learn from each other. Think about what they learn from each other. Think about emotion coaching. Think about the difference between self esteem and self concept. Think about how development at this age influences later development. *Please don't just base your answer on your experiences. It's ok to incorporate them but base your answer on the science of development. Week 9 & 10: Ch 5 Middle Childhood Chapter 5 Middle Late Childhood They've entered elementary school. They're no longer little kids but they aren't teenagers. They need to learn to make decisions and how to interact with their peers. Parents want them to be successful and to do well so they load their afternoons and evenings down with extra curricular activities. Families eat on the go. Children in this age group are now suffering from stress related illnesses at a higher rate than ever before. At this age children begin to compare themselves to each other. This can be positive because it can encourage improvement in skills- especially in sports. It can encourage teamwork. Children make comparisons that help them identify common interests and establish friend groups. But, there is a negative side to comparisons and categorization. Children tend to find the negatives. This may be the first time a parent will hear a child say "I'm stupid. I'm fat. No one likes me." Children may feel isolation and rejection by peers. This is the first time they may encounter true bullying. While younger children, as young as preschool, use mostly social aggression, children in this age group understand the value of relationships and actively work to exclude others they don't like or see as different. This is also the age where physical aggression in bullying may begin. Suicide rates for children 8-12 are on a steady rise in this country and are rising at an alarming rate. The youngest known suicide was a 6 year old child. The number one reason for suicide in children in middle late childhood is bullying. Let's learn more about this fascinating age group! Make sure your answers connect to course concepts and what you learned from videos and websites you visited in the chapter. Answer the prompt. Explain what stress is and why some stress is actually good. Explain why stress, in general, can be harmful. Discuss and react to what you learned about toxic stress from the videos and websites. Make sure you reference specific developmental concepts from the chapter in your answer. Discuss how stress can manifest in children (early and middle childhood) and why they may react the way that they do.
