Critical Appraisal
Following is the critical appraisal of the research article “Effects of yoga on depression and anxiety of women” (complete reference below). It is not an unknown fact that Yoga has indeed been considered one of the most effective forms of healing, in terms of ph
ysical and mental, from ancient times. Considering the fact that it has been thought of as a method of relief from any bad thoughts, this research paper conducts an experiment to study in detail how Yoga affects the mental health of a person, if practiced regularly.
The research analyses different types of Yoga and different fellow researches who have studied this topic and its relationship to stress management before. Work of researchers like Taherkhani and Hosseni who studied the relieving effects of Yoga on obsessive compulsive disorder and Woolery who studied effect of Yoga on young adults, have been discussed and referred to, multiple times in the paper. This proves that the authors have done a great amount of research on very closely related topics of research. The work of researcher Gupta is also studied and related, who had worked on the topic of the effect of lifestyle changes which are yoga-based, on the trait anxiety level of people.
We will begin discussion of the measurement experiment by discussing the target group and the method of segmentation. The researchers target a group of young women who had recently joined a Yoga facility for practicing and experiencing yoga. These women were chosen on the basis of a few criterion. Firstly, these women had no prior proven history of psychological disorders and none of them had been recommended yoga by a health specialist. Secondly, subjects with prior history of psychological problems, drug abuse issues, and who had been yoga practitioners before, have been carefully excluded from the group. All these were determined by a personal questionnaire which the subjects filled privately and signed. The subjects were then randomly divided into an experiment group of 34 participants, and a control group of 31 participants. The experiment group went through the yoga training and the control group were stopped from taking the training, keeping them on the waiting list. The experiment group had an average age of 31.44 (+/- 9.1) years and the control group had an average age of 31.31 (+/- 10.5) years. Comparing the age difference, it was found that it was statistically insignificant, which meant age difference would not be a factor in the result. So, based on the information provided for selection of the target group, we can conclude that it was a pretty well-defined decision, with suitable considerations and exclusions. We will discuss the negative effect of this target group, if any, on the result obtained, later on.
