Health Automation & Tele-Health Introduction The digital advancement has enhanced how the healthcare services can have improved versions In fact, when healthcare services are linked with management and information technology, precise result and smooth operations of manual tasks becomes possible Automation and Healthcare • Automation in healthcare refers to the switching of healthcare services towards digital support. • It is implied that automation replaces manual tasking and helps in attuning desired outputs with the help of technology. Automation and Healthcare • The tasks like data entry, monitoring the health of the patients is one of the key factors that automation can replace. Tele-Health • The application of Tele-health is rather new to the healthcare service sector at global level. • It is the inclusion of information and communication technology into the healthcare system • By this inclusion, the remote support becomes possible with the help of telecommunication sources. The Cost Benefits of Healthcare Automation It simplifies the care delivery cycle to not rely so heavily on human input to do routine clinical testing which provides significant cost savings. It gives time back to staff. Automation tools do not experience human error or fatigue which gives the ability to provide a more consistent basis of care activities. Apps and other features allow healthcare offices to replace more expensive equipment with more inexpensive devices. The Risk of Automation in Healthcare Injuries and Error due to AI systems being wrong. (Wrong drug for a patient, fails to notice a tumor on a radiological scan, or allocates a hospital bed to one patient over another are examples). Data Availability- Patients typically see different providers and switch insurance companies, leading to data split in multiple systems and multiple formats. This fragmentation increases the risk of error, decreases the comprehensiveness of datasets. Privacy Concerns- That the collection of data sets may violate patients privacy, and lawsuits can be filed based on data-sharing between large health systems and AI developers. The Risk of Automation in Healthcare (cont.) Bias and Inequalities - Creating biases for patients based on their medical data, basically saying that one patient deserves better or more care than another. Professional Realignment- A widespread use of Automation, will result in decreased human knowledge and capacity over time, such that providers lose the ability to catch and correct errors and to further develop medical knowledge. Automation in Healthcare Eliminating Jobs Healthcare automation is the future. Automation surrounds us everyday, from self-checkout to auto park vehicles and voice-controlled lights. But healthcare has been slower to adopt than other industries. For example, home health aides only have an eight percent automation potential by 2030, while registered nurses have a 29 percent automation potential and medical assistants have a 54 percent automation potential. Additionally, healthcare practitioners and technical occupations have a 33 percent current-task automation potential and healthcare support occupations have a 49 percent potential. In healthcare currently, automation has eliminated jobs for front desk and office staff who are normally responsible for patients checking in and out and scheduling appointments. In the future robots will replace back office staff in directing patients to different offices, where machines will perform tests and dispense test results. Automation Program Options NCR (World’s Largest Transactional Point-of-Sale) Enables 550+ million transactions Point-of-Sale, Payment Processing, and Inventory Management Starts at $108 a month with a 24-month contract for essentials Epic Systems Service Electronic Medical Record (EMR) software, basically a database management application Supports functions of patient care such as Scheduling Systems for doctors, nurses, and EMTs Systems for lab techs, radiologists, and pharmacists Systems for billing Costs Starts at $1,200.00 for self-hosted solutions $500,000.00 for larger clinics and hospitals AdvancedMD Software Services Provided Billing and scheduling software Reports and analytics Appointment reminders Insurance eligibility Credit card processing E-prescribing of controlled substances Electronic faxing Laboratory interfaces Cost AdvancedMD offers stand-alone medical practice management software (without the EMR system) for $429 per provider per month. Avidex Tele-Health Services: Emergency Room visits Initial nursing facility and discharge visit Home visits Therapy sessions Costs: A visit costs an average of $79 compared to $146 for a doctor’s visit or $1,734 for an emergency room visit AthenaHealth About Cloud - based EHR system allows: Patient care organization Faster documentation ( upload) Scheduling services Coordinate care with other care sites Athena One app for easy access to services Pricing Designed for larger practices in mind $140/ provider / month 4-7% of total practice revenue for billing services Order transmission services $150/ month & $.45- $1.50 a package Data migration $500 - $10,000 >1M $25,000 Custom integration with multiple systems$2,500 - $25,000 Training cost depending on no. of sessions$500- $5,000 Why Telehealth May be Decreasing There have been several limitations for hospitals from the past: Conventional telemedicine today may not offer widespread COVID-19 testing. Telemedicine has not traditionally been used in response to public health crises, and hospitals may be struggling to adopt it quickly. There is currently a lack of endpoints within hospitals to be able to implement telemedicine, so they don’t have the access to the hardware. Telehealth has been viewed as a tool for ambulatory or post-acute care. (Siwicki, 2020) Costs of Telehealth & Automated Healthcare Large upfront costs Costs of purchasing equipment/technology Cost of training current staff Cost of licensing Hard to get full payments for telehealth visits If it doesn’t stick, you wasted your investment Automated Healthcare Sample Potential Issues: Technologically challenged patients/staff Non-standard accents/Mute Technological issues (down servers, bugs, lack of connection) Concerns about the quality of service. The quality of the care is poor. Many of the circumstances may need to be handled face- to- face to make sure the care is good and they are getting the right care. They will focus more on paperwork than the actually patient causing doctor burnouts which could cause poor service Way harder to get scans and diagnosis without having in person appointments.
