“The Atkinson–Shiffrin model “is also referred as the multi-store model or modal model. It is a memory model established in 1968 by Richard Atkinson and Richard Shiffrin (Atkinson, R.C.; Shiffrin, R.M. 1968).The model is grounded on the fact that human memory process the information exactly like a computer process information. Atkinson and Shiffrin identified that human memory has 3 stores:
1. A sensory register, where sensory information goes into memory,
2. A short-term store, can also be referred short-term memory or working memory, which obtains and keeps the information from the long-term store, as well as from sensory register.
3. A long-term store, is a part of memory where information which has been rehearsed or emphasised in the short-term store is held for indefinite period.
The model although has been disapproved for number of reasons but still it is considered remarkable for its findings. The Multi store model of memories explains how a memory process of a human being function. In 1968 The model was established but the idea of 3 different memory stores was not a unique idea at that time as William James proposed a similar kind of model in the 1890 that describes a difference between primary and secondary memory. The primary memory was identified to be made up of of thoughts that are kept in the memory for a very short span of time in consciousness and the secondary memory was identified to be as permanent, unconscious store (James, William, 1890).
1. Sensory register
Sensory register consist of an enormous amount of information that can be held or maintain facts, evidences, info for a very short span of time i.e for a few hundred milliseconds. When an outside stimulus is identified by the senses it is kept for a very short period of time in the sensory memory. The sensory register only detect and hold the information for a short period and does not process information. All of our senses consist of sensory register but Atkinson- Shiffrin model only identifies sound and sight known as Echoic memory and Iconic memory respectively.
a) Iconic memory – “Iconic memory” is only linked with the visual system i.e limited to the field of vision. That means as long as the outside stimulus has entered into the field of vision there is no boundary to the amount of visual information iconic memory can hold at any one time. Since sensory memory does not have the capacity to process the information further, therefore...
