An overview of recidivism rates for drug offenders:
The tendency of a convicted drug offender to reoffend is called as recidivism. The rate of offence tells us about the rate at which the convicts
commit the crime again after being released from incarceration. Though laws are in place to tackle such people but still recidivism rates are quite high among the drug offenders. It is seen that young offenders mostly in their teens have the highest rate of recidivism in drug offence as compared to people who are over sixty years when released from custody. It has also to do with the education level and the age and the intent to rectify themselves in becoming a better person. Though there are various reasons for serial offending recurrences, but the alarming part is that for the drug offenders this is quite common as compared to other crimes, because the drugs becomes a part of their physiological system, which they cannot let go with. So proper rehabilitation programs should be in place to keep the recidivism rate in drug offence in check.
The age of the drug offenders at the time of their release from incarceration is also a fact that is associated with the likelihood of recidivism. That is the reason in various countries these days, drug courts are set up so as to reduce the rate of recidivism for such offenders who are generally administered to conventional probation supervision. As per data it is seen that close to 77% state drug offenders gets rearrested again within five years as compared to the federal offenders where the rate is lower at around 42%. This is quite a striking difference seen in the case of the drug offenders. It is also seen that the rate is more in the males and especially young adults as compared to females. (USSC,2020).
