Role of Probability in Research
Probability is simply defined as the likelihood of an event happening. Probability is a statistical method of determining the chance or likelihood of these events happening (Eichler & Zapata-Cardona, 2016). In research, probability methods are broadly applied to model and describe relationships. Some of the areas of research where probability is widely used are sampling, estimation and prediction.
In sampling, probability is used to determine a representative sample for research. A representative sample is important for valid generalization of research findings and results (Rukmangadachari & Reddy, 2015). Thus, appropriate probability samples are determined based on the characteristics of the population under study. The role of probability in sampling is to ensure that the sample selected from the population is unbiased and sufficient to draw conclusions about the population.
In estimation, probability is used to determine expected values of research attributes and variables. For example, in a research about the relationship between hours of sleep and annual income, we can use probability modelling...
